Solid Mental Magnetic Door Stop, Wall Mounted, Oil Rubbed Bronze

I bought this to try at work and was pleased when it was delivered. It is sturdy and felt heavy-duty. It was easily installed and really works for the kitchen door as it keeps the door open when we need it. The magnet works well. You cannot throw open the door and expect it to catch, we open it and allow the magnet to catch and it stays open until will pull it closed. Our kitchen door is a heavy handmade solid wood door at the villa I manage. I will be buying more for the rest of the villa doors for sure. It is also great that it can be installed in more than one way. Definitely a great buy!!!!

This is a very nice quality door stopper and looks good as well. Once installed, it works perfectly and meets my needs. Now for what you need to know before choosing to install this product into a hollow core door. Modern hollow core doors are essentially thick pressed cardboard and are very thin. This stopper comes with two types of anchors to mount it. One is an expanding sleeve over post type anchor. You drill a hole large enough for the anchor to o into the door and then tighten a nut on the threaded end which pulls the post into the sleeve to expand it, which is supposed to hold it in place. Unfortunately, the thin door material didn't provide enough surface for the sleeve to expand into to hold it. Okay, on to method #2; typical hollow wall (drywall) anchors that you get with pretty much any wall mounting kit. Same issue with the door's thickness not allowing the anchor to stay put and as I drove the screws in, the anchor just spun in the hole. My solution: Self-Drilling Drywall Anchors. There are many available on Amazon or at you local hardware store. I already had holes drilled for the provided anchors, so the self-drilling ones just screwed right into those holes. I used a dab of craft glue (E6000) on the head of the anchor to ensure that they wouldn't just start spinning like the other anchors did. This worked well and seems to be a better solution than what was provided with the stopper.

I installed one this morning on a 36" wide solid core 6 panel bathroom door that wouldn't stay open. There were no instructions included in the box with 2 of the door stops. I had looked at what I could online and Amazon's web site to see how to install them. 1. Remove old door stop. 2. Determine if you want the new one on the wall or floor. That will determine the hardware needed. Hollow core doors not the best to use these on as there are 2 screws needed to put the mounting plate on the back of the door. Solid core doors are best. I think a wall mounted stop is better as it doesn't put pressure on the longer piece if it is mounted on the wall versus 90 degrees on a floor. 3. Put the magnetic base on the end of the door stop as it both parts were attached to the door and wall. That way you can line the stop up where it will need to go on both the wall and door. Separate the two parts. 4. Unscrew the face cover at the base of the longer stop that will hide the screws once installed. It unscrews like a lid on a jar. Set it aside. Use a pair of NEEDLE NOSED PLIERS on the back of the opposite base and unscrew the face cover from the base plate with a spring and button inside. Set the cover, spring, button aside along with the 2 shorter screws. 5. Put the base plate on the magnetic door stop end again to line it up by holding both in place, someone to hold the door helps, while marking holes in the 3 centers where the doorstop will go on the wall, and then mount the base plate on the wall using the 3 longer screws. Drill holes slightly smaller than the screws. Too big a hole and the screws won't have any bite. If you have to use the 3 plastic wall mollies to anchor the screws, you will need bigger holes. Make sure to only put small marks with the drill until you double check the hole positions before drilling deeper holes. 6. Mount the door stop using the 3 longer screws. Screw on the base cover to cover screws. 7. Line up the base plate against the door by leaving it attached to the magnetic end of the stop already attached to the wall. Best to use a pen and draw a circle around it on the door. 8. Drill 2 holes in the door making sure the holes are in line with the plate holes. The holes don't need to be drilled more than about 5/8" deep. Mount the plate to the door with the flat side on the door. Insert the button into the cap facing outward, put the spring inside, smaller end toward the button, push the cover toward the door on top of the base plate. Screw it on. Done. 9. Open the door to make sure the button recesses a little as the door is pushed up against it. The magnet will hold the door open now. Easy to pull the door shut. The longer steel part (expansion anchor) and plastic mollies would be used if you mount the stop to a wall with no wood behind it to hold the screws. See instructions on page with the item for sale

This product if fine. It looks nice, it is easy to install. But, you need to be sure you have enough height on your baseboards so that you can place the wall part high enough to reach the part that attaches to the door. If not, then you won't be able to place the two parts in a way that will allow the ball to fit into the socket. Unfortunately for me, my baseboards are not high enough. So, even after attaching the wall piece as high as I could and placing the door piece as low as I could, the ball from the wall piece does not fit into the socket from the door piece. The good news is that it still works. The magnetic attraction between the two pieces is still strong enough to hold the door open without fitting together as intended. Personally, I think it would have been better to design this unit with a door plate and a swiveling wall plate. That would allow for some leeway in the fit. But, if you have a high enough baseboard, this will work just fine.

The finished result is very good. The spring in the one piece gives it a little cushion when making contact. The magnet is strong enough for what we need and not so strong that it takes a hard pull. As others have noted, it's a little tricky getting the pieces to align. What I did is in the photos. First Picture: I mounted the long piece on my baseboard. Then I placed the door receiver assembly on the end of it. I put tape on the door. Second Picture: I gently closed the door and made contact with the tape, cut a pencil short and traced the outline of the cover. Then I disassembled the door piece and placed the circular bracket in the middle (by eye) and marked my two holes. The Third Picture is the end result.

I had a bathroom door that was never perfectly plumb and would always settle in a half closed position. After receiving the magnetic door stop, I realized that the "clamping" action is much stronger than I expected. I was worried that it might be too weak to keep the door in place, but it takes a significant bit of pull to separate the two parts. With that in mind I was concerned that, if I placed it at the bottom of the door, it might be somewhat difficult to close the door with the handle being 3 feet above the magnetic door stop. The door would probably flex a bit before the door stop let go of the door. So when I installed it, I placed the small piece of the stop about 6"' below the door handle with the larger magnet side of the door stop in the matching position on the wall. That seems to have worked out nicely. Having the handle so close to the magnetic catch gives you a bit more "leverage" in separating the door from the wall stop and avoids having to put much muscle into accomplishing the task. It still takes a noticeable "pull" to separate the door from the door stop, but even the smaller kids manage it with very little difficulty. One more note, because the door stop has a fairly strong clamping action, make sure you have the pieces securely anchored in both the door and the wall. The door side provided a fairly solid piece to set the mounting screws in but I ended up using wall anchors for the wall side of the door stop. It's been several months and we haven't had any problems. Overall, solved a very annoying problem for a few bucks and 20 minutes of my time. Gotta be happy with solutions like that.

Perfect for my door that is normally open but likes to close about halfway by itself. It only took a few minutes to install and works very well. Some people say the magnet is too strong which might be the case if the door is used frequently. For me, this is very solid and doesn't feel like it'll let loose unless you give it a gentle tug. Oh, and it looks really nice! I'd purchased a similar stop on Amazon but you had to screw a large chrome disk to both the door and wall or floor. This on the other hand obscures all mounting hardware. If anyone's wondering, I am using hollow core doors so their fairly light. I could see this being better suited for solid/heavier doors, but again, it works great for me.

Very strong magnet. I installed it myself and I am not very good at this so it is not perfectly aligned but still holds the door open.

Amazon was great. Delivery as always great. The product. Initially I thought I liked the design of how the stop attatches. 3 holes you can see from the front but then are covered with a screw on cap.... but the magnet is so strong that it pulls your drill or screw driver so alignmnent sucks. Which makes getting those screws in so they are counter sunk in and flush really tricky. So then the cover doesnt fit in tight and uniformly. The colour is not BLACK with a bronzed edge like in the picture. Its a gun grey with a cheap copper detail. The whole reason I bought these over just flat black from home depot (for $4 cheaper each) was because of that oil rubbed edge to match my hardware. The screws SUCK. The heads were croocked and one just snapped off. I would return but they are already installed. I wouldnt buy again (go to homedepot.ca buy theirs and save yourself the $4). I recommend the concept as I have another ones of these magnetic door stops in my home, but I would not buy from this manufacturer again for this product.
