The British National Formulary (BNF) is designed to provide prescribers, pharmacists, and health care professionals with current information about medicines used in clinical practice. It is not intended to be a comprehensive guide and other information sources should also be considered when treating patients.The BNF can also be used by anyone who wants to learn more about prescribed medication. In particular, it is a useful resource for the "expert patient" who wants to learn as much about their treatment as possible. It has lots of technical and jargon terms, but it isn't difficult to work out the meanings by going online.Some of the best features, in my opinion, include the section on drug interactions, prescribing in special situations (such as pregnancy), and I particularly like the introductory sections in each chapter which provide a general overview of the treatments.The BNF is published every six months in March and September each year. There is also a separate BNF for Children (BNFC) which is published annually in September.The layout and content of the information in the BNF has been significantly changed since edition 69, and few regular readers like this new format. One of the worst features is the amount of space devoted to the prices all the different brands and strengths of every drug which is pointless. as the prices are updated monthly so will be quickly out of date.The monographs for the drugs have changed from seven sections to twenty sections and new topics include Monitoring Requirements which will be useful. The order has been improved by having the Indication and Dose together which is more convenient. It includes references to NICE guidance, and similar evidence based guidance, which is helpful as it allows you to make more informed decisions about treatment.This is primarily a reference book for students and practitioners in healthcare, but should be of interest to anyone with an interest in prescribed medication.Despite its current shortcomings, it is the best reference book on prescription medicines.
