OUCH - unusable
I am a longtime fan of Rain Design - their original laptop stand looks like nothing much but it's so incredibly useful and perfect in ways one never would have thought to ask for. Needing something portable, I invested in the mBar Pro+ and was so excited for that same type of subtle cleverness and "wow this feels so good" one comes to expect from Rain Design (esp given that they really lean toward Apple customers). What wasn't clear from the photos is how *square* this item is, which is such an odd design choice. They clearly put a lot of attention into making it incredibly flat with very, very crisp (IE SHARP) corners - and we need these against our soft body parts because why?? The height is great, the size is so good, the weight and slim form factor are wonderful, it's incredibly sturdy, the angle is just right (it's maybe 1/4" less tall than the mStand). But the little nub that (necessarily) pokes up and holds the laptop in place buries itself right into the part of the wrist that has all the tendons and nerves. It's not just the unpleasant scratching sensation when one moves their wrist across it, but especially the poke into the wrist. Maybe this is less of a problem on fatter laptops, but I've got a MacBook Air (IE I'm Rain Design's target audience), so it's a very noticeable poke. Every time I think I've positioned my hand in a way that won't hurt, I end up with tingling sensations or shooting pains after awhile (and I don't have wrist or hand issues in that hand). Folks with carpal tunnel really need to stay away. Aesthetically, the flat design, weird proportions, and shortage of color options also make the whole thing look cheap. I'm not subtracting stars for that, but wanted to put it out there because typically Rain Design attends to the whole sensory experience (like Apple). Finally, the way it's offered only in Silver, Space Grey, and Black is quite out of touch with current Apple Aesthetics ... if they're only going to choose 3 colors to offer, they really should be Silver, Starlight, and a 3rd neutral. The way Rain Design is so haphazard about which items are offered in which colors is another big "miss" for their target audience. If they would at least offer every single item in Silver and Starlight, there's at least one cool-tone neutral and one warm-tone neutral, so an Apple user can get all the Rain Design items in either one of those and have it match well with Apple products over a long period of time. Since this item is painful and only available in cool tones, it's sadly getting returned in favor of another brand.
