Recon 1 4" S35VN Razor-Sharp Blade 5.375" G-10 Handle Tactical Folding Knife w/Tri-Ad Lock, Ambidextrous Pocket/Belt Clip

Great knife. Robust. Not pricey. Easy to operate. Good quality. Good medium size. Not bulky. Very lightweight as for such robust knife. Good materials. No blade play in any direction. Blade is centered. My personal comments: I prefer handle with better griping(even Spyderco's G-10 have better grip); it's not suitable for easy and quick finger flipping; be very careful when closing it - the last inch of blade movement is fast and powerful. It's main purpose for me - need a good knife during war.

I have put this knife thru some hard cutting task, it does everything it should and has replaced my overpriced overrated EDC knives. Love the S35VN steel it does hold a scary edge. Lock is hard to release needs to stay lubed and takes a long time to break it. Mine was a return and nothing wrong with knife other that takes a strong thumb to release lock to close blade. I like this knife a lot but know the lock will be tough and take thousands of closings to break in.

Probably the most valuable/practical knife of the Cold Steel folding line. These are razor sharp, well made, sturdy, and quite balanced knives. The action smooths out after working with it a bit. The feel in the hand is very natural as the scales allow for great gripping without chewing up your hand. The total black is a cosmetic drawback for me but that is a minor concern.

I just received this knife today, so I can’t speak to its longevity or how well it holds an edge. But I can say this: this is the first knife that has wowed me right out of the box. I literally said the word “WOW!” when testing its sharpness just now. For the last 15 years, I’ve been using an Emerson Commander and a number of Spyderco knives. This is my first time trying something new outside of that realm. Compared to these other knives, it’s definitely a lot bulkier in the pocket — so if your pocket space is limited, be aware that the fit may not be optimal. The G-10 handle is very solid, and the grip is designed more ergonomically than any of my previous knives. My fingers feel well-protected and there’s not a chance this thing is coming out of my hands in a fight. It locks open *very* firmly — much more so than any knife I’ve used to date. It’s a bit hard to close, but I’ve been opening and closing it repeatedly and it does seem to be easing up, so I think it just needs a couple hundred closes to break it in. The same is probably true or the pocket clip, which feels a bit excessively tight. Not sure if I’ll be leaving it on or not. Aesthetically, this thing is both gorgeous and intimidating. Maybe not the best thing to pull out on a work site for utility use, but will definitely intimidate someone in a defense situation. Overall, this thing feels like a workhorse and I get the impression it’s worth double what I paid for it. I can see why it has a reputation as one of the best defensive folding knives for EDC.

Incredible durability with the Triad lock this is one of the best hard use folders that's on the market period Regardless of cost. The Recon one is just a beast of a hard use folder the grip has excellent thickness so you're going to really be able to put in a lot of force on it without without it being uncomfortable the knife looks incredible it's a very Sleek design yet very comfortable in hand. The blade shape is beautiful for EDC type task as well as harder use type task say during camping or whatever the geometry of this blade is excellent it is a super slicy blade yet very stout. The grind does a really good job of leaving a lot of material for a nice tough blade allowing the knife to have reasonable cutting performance due to a nice geometry i'm not a fan of S35VN Steel in most cases there's only two companies out there that do it really good one is Cold Steel the next is Spyderco those are the only two companies that I will buy that specific steel from because they do a pretty good job on it and you actually get a pretty decent performing Steel. The Recon one is one of those knives that is a classic for a reason because it's built like a tank it's comfortable in hand it'll take whatever you throw at it and it just makes for an all-around good cutting tool. I still wished they made these in CTS XHP steel as it was significantly better but sadly that's not the case anymore.

I got this knife 13 months ago and it's pretty good. Comes with a extra pocket clip for left handers. Mine came with a uneven grind and not very sharp. But after Sharpening it up well its a razor. I got the spear point because it's stronger than a clip point. Cons: Slow to open for most folders even after a year. Somewhat hard to close too. Came dull with even edge Pros: Durable, very rust resistant I've never gotten rust on this and I've used it for fishing alot but I also oil the blade once a week. One of the sharpest knives I have. It gets sharper than my carbon steel mora robust. The grip is nice and is kind of like a guard so you don't have to worry have cutting your hand doing stab work. Very tight blade. The lock tite on the blade screw finally loosened a month ago so I used clear nail polish on the screw threads to prevent the screw from getting loose after tightening. The only concern I'd had have for this knife is s35 is a a very strong and hard steel. But because of how hard it is its more likely to break than softer steel. But if you use it like a knife this will probably last you the rest of your life. I recommend.

I have been scared to purchase this knife. I have seen a lot of reviews about the knife. The things that had me worried the most were the texture of the handle and the lack of liners. Size and cost did not bother me. I have a few knives in my collection. My goal was to find the most functional daily use knife. I have everything from multitools to small slip joints to large expensive name brand folders. I am a dad, husband and work in an office all day. I do like to get out and have adventures with my family but don’t use my knife a lot everyday. The requirements I had for my knife is that it had to be safe, robust, one handed, with enough quality that I knew it could last. The recon one fit the bill for the most part. Like stated above I was worried the lack of liners might compromise safety. The many reviews I watched eased my worry. At the same time those reviews touched on one common issue. The rough handle texture. After a bit of time I decided to just pull the trigger. I have spent more money on knives that I carried very little due to much bigger issues. Come to find out the texture is perfect. A little grippy than most but not sand paper like. If I pulled it out of my pocket 500 times per day then it would start to wear. But really I have pants with wear on the pockets as I have been carrying knives for over 20 years. It’s to be expected. The lock up is amazing. The blade steel is exactly what I am looking for. It holds an edge for a good amount of time but isn’t horrible to resharpen. It is on the bigger side but still sits well in the pocket. For the size it isn’t super heavy. It’s just a well built tool and I hate that I waited so long to get one. I feel my journey to find the most functional edc knife has come to an end.

I bought a Recon 1 about 10 years ago and it is smaller than the current version as you can see from the photos. The blade on the smaller version is about 3 inches and the newer version has a blade that is 1 inch longer. As near as I can tell the older version has been discontinued. I have several other folders of similar size to the older Recon such as a Delica and Rat 1 and some older Gerbers, but the Recon has been my favorite. At first I had problems with my first Recon as I felt the handle was too rough and the clip was too strong making removing from my pocket hard, but I lightly sanded the entire handle and I pried up the clip slightly and that took care of the issue. Also I was concerned about the lack of metal liners in the handle, but that turned out to not be a problem at all as the handle is very strong without metal liners. As I said my older Recon 1 was my favorite folder and edc for 10 years. The blade was sharp and sharpened easily, I think the blade is Aus-8, and there still is no play in the blade in either direction, the blade is still centered perfectly, and it is light for its size. I used it for edc and for hiking and camping making feather sticks, cutting cord and food prep. Then I decided a larger Recon 1 might be better for outdoor use, so I bought the newer version which is considerably larger. I was not disappointed. All the desirable traits and qualitys are there in the newer and larger version and they say it has better steel. The blade has no play and is perfectly centered like the old one. It is remarkably light for such a large folder. The handle on the newer one is not quite as rough as the older one and won’t require any sanding although the pocket clip is still too strong and I might have to pry it up a little, but no biggie. I didn’t baton with the older version but I think this newer one might take it. The newer one is a little big for edc, but certainly viable in that capacity and definitely more intimidating if an unfortunate situation for self protection should arise. Anyway I am very happy with my new Recon 1 and don’t anticipate buying another folder for a long time.
