D6 Dreamcast - Great Retro Controller for 2D games
The D6 Dreamcast has become my new favorite 2D retro game controller. While it's clear that many people will gravitate toward it for fighting games, it might not be the right fit for everyone. If you're expecting the smooth, fluid travel of a typical floating membrane pad (like an M30), I wouldn't recommend the D6, as it probably won’t meet your expectations. While it works well enough for fighting games, there's a bit of an adjustment period. The controller is extremely precise because of the microswitches, which means your movements need to be more deliberate. You can still chain hadoukens, but the feel is different from what you might be used to with a membrane style pad. The microswitches on the D-pad have a fantastic feeling, providing a satisfying click with each press. Personally, I find this controller to be perfect for 2D platformers and retro games and my new main controller for that use case. I actually prefer it over the M30, which can sometimes miss inputs, something the D6 doesn't have trouble with. It’s an awesome controller for emulation, where every input counts. The face buttons and shoulder buttons have a nice feel to them and very responsive. The build quality is excellent, easily one of the best Retro Fighters has put out. However, the D-pad will be a point of contention with players. Some will love the precision and satisfying click, while others might wish for a looser, membrane-style feel. If you're looking to use this for more than just fighting games, I highly recommend it. Plus, the D-pad can emulate an analog stick (LS/RS) on PC, Dreamcast, and Switch, so you can use it for analog games as well.

Surprisingly solid option
Perfect for Dreamcast and one of the few controller options I've seen with an external VMU dock. Connects super fast, feels great in the hand, and personally I really like the clicky micro-switch buttons. I thought the lack of a joystick would be an issue, and it probably would be for games like MDK2, but for games like Skies of Arcadia and Powerstone 1/2 this setup is perfect. My only real complaint is the VMU dock's cable is super short, so I couldn't position it nicely on the shelf (the shelf is just deep enough for the dreamcast + hdmi adapter so it was either hang down over the edge or tuck it to the side with the screen facing away)

The Dpad is not great.
The controller shell itself feels like a decent quality design, the wireless connection seems stable, and the shoulder buttons seem alright, but everything else falls short. All the main action buttons on the face and dpad have microswitches that are clicky, but have a lot of pretravel before actuation which gives the buttons a mushy feeling you wouldn't get from standard controllers using rubber membranes for their buttons. There is no snappy tactile feedback to be had on this controller. Now the main reason most people are getting this for is the Dpad. The dpad on the original Dreamcast controller is infamous for not being that good when needing to do flowing motions for fighting games. The D6 dpad is one of the strangest dpads because it doesn't seem to have a center pivot like every other good dpad that's out there. You can press down all 4 directions at once because of the missing center pivot. Also, if you are used to the dpads on controllers like the Genesis/MegaDrive 6 button, Sega Saturn, Super Nintendo, PlayStation, and so on. The dpad on the D6 is definitely not what you're used to. If you try to use the D6 dpad like the other dpads you've trained on for years, you won't get anywhere. If you press too hard it causes missed inputs due to no center pivot and ruins combos. You have to press A LOT lighter than you think you do in order for moves to come out normally. This goes against all the muscle memory developed on good dpads from the greats. If you are not using this for fighting games, it is probably a passable controller, but with the main 6 face buttons, this is really aimed towards fighting games and from my experience, it falls very short in that regard. For retro consoles, the dpad makes or breaks a controller and the D6 definitely isn't the right controller if you're looking for a good dpad on Dreamcast. It's a shame too, because the design of the controller is there, but the execution is not the best.

NO issues at all- works great with street fighter 6- love it!
i was absolutely ready to return this controller if i had any dpad issues with fighting games- i was VERY cautious after reading as many reviews as possible about it and youtube videos like segalordx etc - my expectations were very low... well...i honestly cant reproduce the issues that they are talking about... street fighter 6,capcom vs snk and more.. no issues with moves/special moves/or supers... it plays great! great feeling buttons and precise movement- i really dont know how else to say it... buy it and you can always return it if you dont like it- i think another review said it was like a saturn controller dpad with the feeling of a neo geo cd controller... and you know what.. thats true and i love it! i bought this for my dreamcast but i am considering using it for pc too now

I was after a good fighting controller for my Dreamcast, and this seemed like it. On first use, I was a little alarmed. The d-pad clicks at each of the 8 direction points to register a press, and I couldn't pull off a dragon punch at all. It took a while, but now I'd say I can do them with the same (if not slightly better) regularity as an analogue stick (3 out 4). Other actions are much easier, though 180s also took a bit of getting used to. Basically, give it some time. It's different to other controllers so first use impressions perhaps aren't the best. After a while, it starts to click.

Let me save you the agony: the Retro Fighters Dreamcast D6 is one of the biggest pieces of plastic garbage I’ve ever wasted money on. I took a chance on this thing even after Sega Lord X ripped it in his review. I thought, “Eh, maybe it’s not that bad. I’ve liked other controllers people complained about.” Jesus Christ, I wish I’d listened to him. The D-pad is an abomination. It’s stiff, clicky, shallow, and utterly useless for anything requiring precision. I tried 30 dragon punches in Street Fighter II and landed 5. FIVE. With a Saturn controller, I can hit 28-30 out of 30 without breaking a sweat. This D-pad is like someone took every design mistake possible and jammed it into one hateful little cross of plastic. It’s not just bad — it’s actively hostile toward fighting games. Retro Fighters should be ashamed to call this a “fight pad.” It’s more like an “anti–fight pad.” And for the people saying “Yeah, it feels great!” — I’m convinced those folks couldn’t pull off a dragon punch if their life depended on it, with any controller or stick. They simply don’t know any better. This controller is trash. It’s already back in the box, and honestly, the box deserves better than to hold something this worthless. I wouldn’t wish this D-pad on my worst enemy. If you care even slightly about fighting games or your thumbs, do not buy this.
