Kershaw Secret Agent (4007); Concealable Boot Knife with Strong Single Edge 8Cr13MoV Steel Blade; Arrives with Dual Carry Molded Sheath and Stealthy Non-Reflective Oxide Finish, 3 OZ

Positives: * Well made. * Nice retention on the sheath. * Edge neatly ground (it needed a little stropping, but no biggie to me.) * A variety of mounting options (I bought rubber straps for boot carry, goes on belt or in pocket as is) * I have always been happy with Kershaw; you get what you pay for or more. I own more of them than I can count quickly. * 8Cr is a good enough steel for this knife; no need for something Negatives: * Only sharpened on one side. That is on me because I didn't read the description carefully enough. * Packaging not as good as usual. The box is too big, flimsy, and did not contain desiccant. * I worry that the blade coating will wear with time spoiling the cool look. None of the negatives are at all bothersome to me, especially for $35 or less.

Appears to be another run of the mill garden variety boot knife. The factory edge needed some honing, and it is only a single edge knife as the other side is flat dull and unsharpened whatsoever but also in such a way that one could easily sharpen it themselves but once it is sharpened (properly), it will easily slash cardboard edges off like butter. The tip, razor sharp. It is going in whatever it is thrust in out of the box, which is what this blade was designed for. I can't speak for the durability of the tip, but I would expect it to hold up at least to normal use. The sheath, needed some "break in" before I could pull it without also removing the sheath with it from the boot. After drawing the knife from the sheath by hand about 50-75 times it finally loosened up to where I could pull the knife from the sheath while latched to the boot and not bring the sheath along with it. The steel is typical Chinese as is seemingly customary on these knives, with made in China stamped on the end of the handle. So with that, my overall opinion of this blade is it's a beater. Buy it and use it till it breaks then buy something else. It ain't something I plan on passing on or handing down.

For the price, it's certainly hard to miss up. Let's do a quick review. Pro's: -Rubberized, fat in the middle handle. This is how a knife handle should be - the tried and true method of preventing your hand from slipping up, is to make it fat in the center of your hand. The width where the hand-guard would be is small, yet adequate. -The profile is good, and follows the traditional fairbairn-sykes idea - nothing to intrude with the penetration of the knife. -The price is right. -The sheathe is well-made, but has some downsides. More on that later. -The finish is decent, and may be a negative for some. But if you like your knife to show some wear after you've put it through the paces, this is great. -I personally like the steel, it's a little softer than AUS-8 but it sharpens very quickly and you can put a very sharp edge on it. -No blade wiggle in the sheathe. Con's: -Manufacturing lines, and the screws are very obvious. -The sheathe makes it difficult to mount a different kind of clip onto it - there was no uniform idea for the hole spacing on it's edges to put a different sheathe on with it. -The biggest con is that it advertises as a double-edged, but only one side is sharpened. I had to manually grind the other side down into a sharp edge - that should be stated on the box that this is the "updated" design and is only single-edged. - The con of the steel is that it doesn't retain sharpness for long. Considering this isn't really a utilitarian knife, and is more for very specific duties that the utility knife can't or might struggle to do, then edge retention isn't as big of a priority. It IS a chinese steel, but it's one of the best chinese steels you can get. You won't be confusing it for Elmax any time soon, though. -Didn't come sharp out of the box. This is a stupidly easy thing for the company to do, and no one minds spending an extra dollar to pay the quality control guy to do his damn job. Kershaw is usually great about this, but this is the first one that didn't come with a great edge on it already. You may have a different experience.

Chromoly is great, I always build bikes with this material because it's stronger yet lighter than steel. I still don't get the truth to the review featuring the blade bending. Instead, I got the same type of experience of heavy steel while grinding the blade sharper as well as grinding the unsharpened side. It took a long continuous holding of the blade on the grinder as it was real hard. I love double bladed knives and it just can't be carried in NYC or on a train as far as New York law is concerned. I was upset with the last rubber handle dagger but this blade has no bulb shape and the rubber is not so pronounced so when it is on your necklace it wont stick to your shirt at all, for me, anyway. It is not too small for the hand and the handle is great in person, a lot different than it looks. The attachment is the main important thing. A great example is my main favorite knife. The Gil Hibben Silver Shadow. I had a custom kydex sheath made up but then I was warming myself with a jet heater and then the sheath was loose from then on. Oh, well, found it more of a backpack knife. The absence of kydex I love a lot. Apparently the sheath clicks very secure on the indentation of the screw in the handle and it does not seem to loosen and at the same time you can put your pointer finger on the tall point of the sheath and push the sheath while with the same hand pull out the knife. The sheath is like a diving knife and even has a drain hole for water at the bottom. Great, the only thing is missing is a simple shoelace type cord or a necklace knife option. I have been carrying heavy knives for awhile and it is so great to not carry the weight so I find this not a back up but just my regular knife. I wanted to polish the blade but even the black blade is cool now that I am using it. I loved the Onion knife by Kershaw a long time ago. It was my favorite. This knife is really enjoyable too. There are others like 80 dollars a bit longer but I like this length now that I actually have it. This knife won't bend at all, knives are not prying tools whatsoever. I never would throw a knife, just try to hold onto it.

Got mine yesterday, opened it up and was happy. Spent a few minutes getting a nice sharp edge on it. This is not a "work knife", this is a weapon. The blade is thin and the point is very sharp - it isn't designed to be a tool. The point will most certainly penetrate and the edge will slash. The grips are decent enuff and if need be, custom grips can be fitted easily. - other comments about the retention of the sheath - yes, the sheath has a death grip on the knife but there is an easy fix. There is a little dimple that does the work so removing the dimple with a nail file or whatever eases up the retention. - it is a single edge knife but it wouldn't take much at all to make it double edged, the contours are already there. - it is full tang and you can put a lanyard on it if you so desire. I'm happy with the purchase. Yes, I'd buy another if I needed one.

Hello: Been a Kershaw fan for years, own multiple. This item has good weight, sharp, good length. However, a boot knife is traditionally two-edged.... I'll take the heat having not obviously read the reviews. Also, the sheath leaves one desiring more usability. I own a Gerber boot knife, where the metal clip of the sheath can be rotated 180 degrees allowing a body to wear the knife inverted (handle down) when clipped to their boot (a taller boot such as I wear being cowboy boot). Worth the $20 I've paid, I'll keep it. May God bless you through His only son Jesus Christ.
