It is a hard top and I think they will crack if not opened properly. When I got my first order one of the lids was broken. I love them and I am just careful not to remove the lid roughly,

It holds just a tad under two tablespoons. I was concerned with this as well, but I am very pleased with the product and the size of the cubes.
