These SIMPURE- 4.5" x 10" Deionized Resin Filters, Whole House Cation DI Resin Water Filter Cartridges are a perfect fit into my Big Blue type of filter housings, and I put one of these in the number two position for some water softening and filtering. I have two wells - one at a remote cabin and one at my house and these are perfect for the potential softening and iron removal at both places. My number one filter is always a 5 micron for removing particulates, etc. and number three and four are carbon and metal removing filters. This new filter does not slow my water flow or pressure at 20 GPM @ 70 PSI and -that is always my first test on new filters- at both wells. Good filters at a good price for the water softening effect- until I can install a regular water softening system- but I will still use these also. Good find!

I noticed an immediate change in the softness of the water. The old filter was no longer working. I use it in a two-filter setup that I built myself to filter water from the hose outside so I can use it to wash cars. Prior to installing the filter system, the water would leave lots of calcium spots from all the dissolved minerals in our city water. Now with this replacement filter, I am back to having a spot-free car.

If you are looking to get soft water but don't want to put in a water softener system, this might be a compact and cheaper way to go. If you already have a whole house filtration system (multiple filter system - 10" x 4.5" size) you can use this. Just change out one of the filters with this one and you'll get softened water. With a standard softening system, you will need to have it do a regeneration every few days. This filter SAYS you need to change it every 6 to 12 months (with no regeneration) but if you have this on your main line, I highly doubt it would last that long. A standard system has WAY more cation resin - at least in the order of 10x or more and that needs to be regenerated pretty often for a standard house. This filter cannot be opened up - otherwise you can manually regenerate by soaking the resin beads in salt water and put back in. It's sealed - you can conceivably soak this entire canister in salt water but I have not tried that yet. It's a good concept (saving space and not needing a machine to do regeneration) but I question what the real-life duration of filtering hard water without that salt flush.

I've installed then but yet to see how much better they improve the water quality. They seem like they are well constructed. I have well water and alot of iron deposits so hopefully this will eliminate that issue. The fact that they last 6 months is a plus.
