Reasonably Priced, Looks Industrial, Quite Large, IP66 Waterproofing Good if Correctly Assembled
I got this RCD to insert in the extension lead supplying our electric blanket. Our house was built before the regulations stipulated that RCDs needed to be installed and it is important to protect items that could pose a serious problem if an earth leakage occurred. Another thing this protects agains a design flaw in our particular blanket that results in it always turning on at full power. In the event of a power cut followed by restoration the blanket resets to maximum and cooks the sleeper. With this RCD a power outage trips it to the off position and it doesn’t automatically reset after restoration. This is exactly what you need for power tools, mowers and badly designed electric blankets, it is called an “active RCD”, and just what you don't need for freezers and fishtanks, where you need a “passive RCD” that doesn’t trip on power cuts. One thing that could be improved in this RCD is the indicator flag that shows whether to load is connected or not. This is a mechanical “flag”, not a light, so you need illumination to see it. I spent a minute or so peering at it in the dark before coming to this conclusion. Even with illumination it is difficult to see because it is very small and when in the OFF (BLACK) position half of the red flag is still visible. I have added a couple of photographs to show what mine looks like in the two positions. The RCD comes with its two cable grips and their four screws (the bright ones with attached washers) and the eight screws that secure the end caps, in a zip-lock bag. Make sure you have all these bits before you proceed to wire the RCD.Then instructions guide you in stripping the correct length of insulation off your wires; 25mm core exposed plus 10mm stripped - this worked for me. Remember to pass the cable through the gland with the nut attached or if the nut is loose slide it onto the wire before proceeding. I found it a tight squeeze getting the wires into the terminals and I would think this is even harder with fully rated 13A flex. To comply with the IP rating for waterproofing it is important to tighten the sealing glands so the grommet is pressed against the outer insulation of the cable - this needs to be done before fitting the end caps as they prevent the gland nut turning once in place. When fitting the end-cap it is important to ensure the sealing gasket around it is carefully lined up before you tighten the four screws to seal it.If carefully assembled this RCD should perform well in wet conditions. Providing you have assembled it carefully it is rated as IP66, indicating it is dust proof and protected against powerful jets of water. The design is rather “industrial” for a domestic environment, but where safety is an issue this is a secondary concern.

Worked and no failures or false tripping
Ordered to protect a long cable feeding a marquee with fridges and a sound system via a 50 metre cable. Be aware that the maximum flex which they can handle is 1.5mm. As I wanted to use 2.5mm flex for the long run I had to make a13 amp to 16 amp adaptor for each end. That makes perfect sense as the house supply was on 13 amp sockets and I wanted to use 16 amp connectors for the external connections. It did the job perfectly with no trips during 4 days of connection with varying loads.
