Strip (wires) like a pro!
It all started one time I took my usual sidekick E...n to a repair/upgrade job. As usual, he came well prepared, boasting about his new, still in a blister pack, Klein Tools 11063 Catapult Wire Stripper, similar model to the one being reviewed here but without the built in cutter.Immediately after unpacking the tool he began to put it to the test. He stripped a few wires of various gauge without a hitch but was outwardly perplexed when he could not locate the means to cut the wire with his newly acquired gadget. After watching E...n stripping wire after wire with his 11063 for the entire day, I decided that I should get one for myself.A brief visit to Klein Tools website revealed that the company offers a model of the tool with a built in cutter. Naturally, that was the one I ordered. Here are my opinions and findings about the Klein Tools 11063W after using it for about 5 weeks.Operation and Design:* The mechanism appears to be well thought out and designed. The fact that the unit sounds and works the same now as it did first out of the box is a testament to its sturdiness.* Throughout each stripping cycle each moving part of the tool follows its designated path in sync with the rest of the parts. This mechanical choreography ensures a perfectly stripped wire every time. But that's not all, at the end of the cycle the tool is designed to completely separate and clear itself away from the stripped wire, thus protecting the bristles from being inadvertently bent or otherwise deformed. Needless to say that all this wizardry happens in a blink of an eye and is completely transparent to the user, all I have to do is feed the wire and squeeze.Ergonomics:* This tool is very easy to operate. I just have to remember to squeeze all the way each time and not try to be fancy by squeezing part way. Note: this does not apply to when I want to partially pre-strip the wire and leave the jacket on to be pulled off by hand later.* The shape of the grips offer excellent control and effortless operation even with work gloves.* The grips are resin clad for insulation, cushioning, and no slip.* I have small hands (6.5") but I have no difficulties operating this unit and it feels comfortable and well balanced in my hand.Undocumented feature:The 11063W has two rows of semicircular notches on the jaws that line up and contract to form a continuous circular cutting edge around the wire. Each pair of notches is sized and designated for each gauge from 8 down to 22AWG. However, I have been able to strip wires finer than 22AWG without using any of the notches by simply placing the wire past the notches all the way back at the base of the jaws. The un-notched flat jaws at the base do a great job of stripping 24 and even 26AWG wires. High speed video analysis revealed that as the jaws come together the top jaw moves ever so slightly along the one on the bottom. This cross movement rolls the finer wire across the jaws and creates a circular incision in the insulation. The remainder of the strip cycle separates the insulation at the incision and removes it. Go figure...A few words about the built in cutter.Once I was working with 14 Awg really fine stranded wire. At one point I wanted to cut off some excess from the stripped end. So with a bit of anxiety but a healthy dose of enthusiasm I used the built in cutter. The unit cut the wire well, but the cut off end separated into many fine short strands that immediately found their way into the mechanism. The first few blank/dummy cycles felt and sounded different and surely wrong. I thought for sure I had successfully jammed my poor stripper. To my surprise but a great deal of relief, simultaneously shaking and squeezing the unit a few times completely cleared the jam. Now when I make similar cuts with 11063W I orient it so that all the debris simply falls through. Note: this only seems to apply to short ends of finely stranded wire, cutting long ends or insulated wires has been good and uneventful.Recently I took E...n to another job. This time I was sporting the better stripper. I noticed a few glances of envy as he watched me strip and cut all day. So at the end of the day I gave him my Klein Tools 11063W Catapult Wire Stripper as gift, after all, he is a good worker and a nice guy. He had no idea I had another one ordered and already on its way to me.
