Just awful enough to qualify as someone's guilty pleasure, this convoluted thriller was supposed to cash in on the supposedly sexy teaming of Sylvester Stallone and Sharon Stone (then hot from her ample exposure in Basic Instinct ), but their naked groping in a shower provides one of the film's unintentionally funny highlights. Ray Quick (Stallone) is a former CIA bomb expert whose former colleague (James Woods) is now in cahoots with a Miami drug cartel led by kingpin Joe Leon (Rod Steiger), who chews the scenery while his son Tomas (Eric Roberts) proceeds with a greedy hidden agenda. May Munro (Stone) hires Quick to kill off Roberts. The Specialist , featuring lots of explosions and redeemed by a dandy role for James Woods, is best suited for ardent Stallone and Stone fans. --Jeff Shannon Ray Quick (Sylvester Stallone), US demolition expert, attempts to abort the assassination of a South American drugs baron when he realises innocent children will be killed in the explosion. However, his partner (James Woods) goes ahead with the mission, leaving the duo permanently estranged and Quick psychologically scarred. Years later, a beautiful woman (Sharon Stone) asks Quick to come out of retirement to kill a Cuban drug lord who has murdered her father. Quick initially refuses, but is soon drawn into a plot that brings him in contact with his ex-partner once again. Review: The Specialist (1994) DVD - Everything OK. Exciting, violent, stylised and trashy all at once. Lots of fun.
Mocked on release for Stallone and Stone's deliberately over-steamy suggestive dialogue ("I hear you...control your explosions...") and Rod Steiger's peculiar 'Cuban' accent, this is actually a pretty enjoyable action thriller full of 'over-the-top' scenes and stylised drama. Set in Miami, Stone's 'May Munro' is determined to recruit Stallone's 'Ray Quick' who is a retired explosive specialist previously employed by the CIA to perform covert assassinations. May's family were killed by local big-time gangsters and she can't shake the need for vengeance. Slowly Ray is drawn in by May's advances, finally intervening when she decides to go after the bad guys personally. Chief among the ne-er do wells is 'Tomas Leon', and Eric Roberts plays his scumbag role with relish, making him utterly snakelike and repulsive as the slick psychotic son helping his father control the Cuban Mafia in Miami. May has several targets and Tomas is at the top of the list. Unfortunately for her, their security is handled by James Woods' 'Ned Trent', a psychotic ex CIA spook who wants Ray's head for getting him thrown out of the agency. From there the film builds its thrills from showing Ray hunting the gansters, and Ned hunting the bomber, leading to some very flashy and enjoyable action. Woods plays his role with amusing excess and villainy, Stone is vastly over-muscled but sincere, and Stone is better than the role requires - her May's eyes flash with the pain and viciousness of a wounded animal in many scenes, and you feel for her predicament. Yes, it's dated a little because of the very '90s action feeling, and yes, it's pantomime villainy - it's not going to win any screenwriting awards. But it's also explosive, exciting, dramatic and better than it has any right to be. Very enjoyable trash.

Stallone and Stone are on top form for this story of explosive revenge + fluffy cat
A classic 'revenge' movie with big bangs throughout. I'd say it takes some cues from 'Deathwish' series. This movie has repeat value, which is surprising as much of the tech seems somewhat dated by 2018 standards. It is probably helped a lot by the use of dry, witty humour throughout. If you ever punch a code into a door entry system, you'll think of the guy whose last view of the world was to read 'Bye Bye' on a LED display. It might not stand up well to the discerning movie goers of today, but it is worth a watch with an open mind, especially as it is now included on Amazon Prime Video. Its 1hour 45mins, with very few slow moments. Look out for the fluffy cat.
