loved it
I love this version of Death Note. They fixed two problems in the anime. The first being the annoying exaggerated character of Misa, who would work well in a comedy, but is just annoying in the excellent psychological thriller/ detective story that is the anime. The second being that SPOILER!!! one of the most likable characters dies too soon and is replaced in the middle of the anime story with a disappointing result. I like the ending of this film better. There are two problems with this version, though. 1) Ryuk was better fleshed out in the anime, was more interesting. 2) Also in the anime Light gradually changes under influence of the Note, how it possesses him while he owns it, brings out the worst, so that even Ryuk is surprised. However Light in the film version is a more believable character. Seems more like a bright, intelligent young man, who is otherwise regular rather than a gorgeous genius who excels in everything and is almost superhuman. I like the fact that you can watch this version and still feel tension and get surprised as some of the characters and stories got changed.

The Ultimate Set for Fans AND New Readers
This box set is more than amazing. As well as containing the full 12 volumes of the original Death Note manga, it has the special 'Volume 13: How to Read' with character profiles, mini comics, a card with L's real name on, interviews with the writers, the manga's pilot chapter and more, AND a 'How to Read' booklet with the full instructions of the Death Note! All of this is in an easy to carry, foldable box covered with artwork showing Light and the Shinigami. The story itself is a gripping psychological thriller that is quite a reading-heavy manga with multiple plot twists so that you never know where it's going. The plans developed by Light and L are so cleverly written that they'll blow your mind. With several story arcs introducing new characters almost every volume, you'll be captivated right until the incredible ending, and after that there's the extra volume 13 to use as the definitive encyclopedia for all things Death Note.A must-have for any Death Note fans, or a complete compilation for new readers that is considerably cheaper than buying the individual volumes separately.

Not as good as the anime.
These movies were okay. Not as great as I heard people saying they were and I still don't think that the second one had a better ending than the anime. They also don't have the same great music the anime had which was really annoying, as the anime had one of the best soundtracks ever in my most humble of opinion. The CGI is pretty good though and gives it a nice surrealistic feeling which I liked, although there were a few moments that made me cringe. The characters are also changed quite a bit in this and have different motivations here and there with different scenes occurring because earlier scenes didn't play out the way that they should have done, which took away from some of the dramatic suspension in my opinion.

Awesome
I'd previously seen a few of the anime episodes at a mates, but he only had half of them. So when I saw there were films out I thought great. A lot cheaper then buying the anime DVD series. The films are very true to the anime and miss hardly anything out. The characters are played superbly, an the cgi on ryuk and rem is good too. The twists and turns keep you gripped. All in all a must have to add to the collection.

Asian cinema at its finest.
Don't think that there is anything I can add that hasn't been said already about these two films. Both are excellent examples of asian cinema at its best. The only minor niggle with the set is the product picture gives the impression that box was 'book like' where as in reality it is just a simple double dvd box and there are no extra art books like you can get in the single movie set. But a great purchase none the less. Expect if I had the extra cash spare I would of gone for the single movie set. Death Note 2 - The Last Name (2 Disc Limited Edition) [2006] [DVD ]

A worthwhiled watch,
A very worthwhile watch, an interesting story with excellent portrayal of Ryuk, a Death God. Some twists and turns to the story line which are not always obvious. I've not seen the Animated or Comic versions so can not make any comparison. Note that this film is NOT dubbed, but but does have English subtitles. I prefer subtitles to dubbing as you get any sound effects or emphasis of the voices in the original unaltered state but others may prefer dubbed so they are not distracted from any action by having to read what has been said

Good for fans but books and anime are way better
I would suggest seeing this to all the Death Note fans, but it's really not that special. The quality isn't that good (it might be like this for the most Japanese movies, but I haven't seen that many). The story is OK, but since they couldn't fit the whole manga into the movie it's rather different. You get some characters merged with together into one. The biggest flaw I think is that you don't really hear/see Light's and L's thoughts, so because of that it falls quite flat.If you like the manga then see it. But first watch the anime which is way better.

Death Note
Great movie and not to be missed..there is also a third part to this as it is a trilogy. Also if you like this theme and idea there is a whole animated TV series. Love the idea of demons and the death note. Also this is great in Blu-ray. For years I have dealt with a poor quality copy of these movies on DVD. So the Blu-ray has bought another dimension to this franchise, deeper colour, sharper picture, greater sound.
