Good penn quality
Great quality and look. The reel is a little noisy even with the alert turned off but it feels very solid.

Broke from the Git Go
My 50 year old Penn trolling reel finally bit the dust. It gave me good service, so I bought a new one. First thing out of the box, the star drag did not work. Then it did, then it didn't. I went on and loaded about 100 yards of 15 lb mono line. Then the reel quit working altogether. I looked to see if perhaps some line was caught on the side of the spool. Nope. All was good. It just quit working (spinning). I shipped it back for a refund. BTW, I have 3 other 50 year old Penn reels that are all working fine. They were all built in the USA. The new reel was not.

It works
I cant speak to how well it maintains over time, as ive only used it one season. What i can say is that it is a very good reel for the pricepoint; smooth action, good break, sturdy construction. I've heard that some struggle with defects on their new reels, mine however was prestine, no faults what so ever. The handle also feels good in my hands, something not every reel does, this is great when fishing larger game that takes a while to secure. All in all a great product so far.

Decent , serviceable
Very serviceable, China made. Not as well made as the old one's. I bought 2, probably get 2 more. The ratio is in the 4s , so it is a slow return . Clicker is loud

Another good Penn reel
This is not a Fin-Nor, but it's a whale of a lot less expensive, and it performs flawlessly. The level wind is a nice touch and the line counter reads a good estimate of the distance. The line counter counts the reel revolutions for distance, as all mounted reel line counters do, so it gets off a bit as the diameter of the reel/line combination decreases. A more accurate line counter will measure the line as it spools off the reel, but they are a pain in the ...back, so I'm happy.

Built to last
I bought this Penn 9M to put on a new rod I bought to replace an older rod that was stolen. That rod had an older Penn No. 9 on it. I caught some nice salmon on that setup, some in fresh water but mostly in salt water. Even with very little maintenance, that reel held up very well. This reel is brand new, but still almost identical. Penn General Purpose Reels will always be my favorite reels for trolling for salmon. I have a couple of newer reels and several that are 20-30 years old. It can be tough to tell the difference between the older reels and the newer reels because the design really has not changes over the years. And it for a good reason. These reels are simply the best, most durable reel you can buy. If you want a reel that will last forever, buy Penn General Purpose.

Excellent Fishing Reel
I used this fishing reel on a recent trip to Navarre Beach Fishing Pier in Florida. Most fishermen there were using spincasting reels .. which were designed for smaller freshwater fish. They are now very popular with the saltwater fishermen who have never learned how to properly cast a levelwind baitcasting reel. However .. for "old-school" fisherman like me who grew up on the Gulf coast of Texas .. we understand that for strength and durability .. and bringing in larger game fish .. this reel out-performs the spincasters by a mile. This reel will haul in an 80lb. tarpon or a 600lb. shark with no problem ! Excellent product ! Excellent price !

Check your line counter once you’ve spool the reel with your test line. If recommended 25lb test is 300’ only spool that amount otherwise the line counter will read inaccurately.

You get a lot of value for your money with this reel… As with other Penn reels, this general purpose multiplier reel which also features a level line winder is solidly built and should last a long time. The maximum drag of 15 lbs should up to 95% of fish you may encounter in local coastal areas. Penn reels tend to be on the heavier side due to their material construction, but in the case of multiplier reels this consideration is quite negligible as you would only handle both the reel and the boat rod once a fish strikes. I do not consider this reel suitable for casting from the shore as a spinning reel would be the best option in that case. Alternatively, this reel could also be used from land where a heavy bait needs to be “dropped down” and the rod/reel combination secured in a stationary location. This reel.also holds a substantial amount of line. In conclusion, given that one is not after big game fish, and is not finicky about weight and other sophistications (like a dual speed lever drag which would at least cost five times as much) I would definitely recommend this tried and tested reel for general purpose coastal fishing.
