You can try to train your dog to eliminate in certain areas where you don't mind if the grass is damaged, or put down fake turf or a rock bed if they will eliminate there, or maybe try watering the area the dogs eliminate most commonly a little each day so it isn't being absorbed as quickly through the grass blades directly? Or if you have a deck with multiple exits to the lawn you could alternate which part of the deck you allow the dogs into the lawn from so the issue is less concentrated.

By softer do you mean more loam? If so, gypsum is going to help but making sure you have the appropriate amount of Phosphorus in your soil is a key component. Gypsum is a great soil amendment but I like a product from Southland Organics made specifically for"softening soil" pH is also a consideration too help break up clay soil.
