To most of us, learning something "the hard way" implies wasted time and effort. Good teaching, we believe, should be creatively tailored to the different learning styles of students and should use strategies that make learning easier. Make It Stick turns fashionable ideas like these on their head. Drawing on recent discoveries in cognitive psychology and other disciplines, the authors offer concrete techniques for becoming more productive learners. Memory plays a central role in our ability to carry out complex cognitive tasks, such as applying knowledge to problems never before encountered and drawing inferences from facts already known. New insights into how memory is encoded, consolidated, and later retrieved have led to a better understanding of how we learn. Grappling with the impediments that make learning challenging leads both to more complex mastery and better retention of what was learned. Many common study habits and practice routines turn out to be counterproductive. Underlining and highlighting, rereading, cramming, and single-minded repetition of new skills create the illusion of mastery, but gains fade quickly. More complex and durable learning come from self-testing, introducing certain difficulties in practice, waiting to re-study new material until a little forgetting has set in, and interleaving the practice of one skill or topic with another. Speaking most urgently to students, teachers, trainers, and athletes, Make It Stick will appeal to all those interested in the challenge of lifelong learning and self-improvement. Review: Must read for learners - A must read for those who struggle learning new things. This book provides how our brain actually learns new things. Review: Changed my understanding of real and effective learning ! - Honestly I struggled reading the first few chapters of this book as they just covered the experience of other highly skilled professionals. It all made sense in the last chapter where the reader finally gets to learn how to use these research findings in real life. 5 stars for the research work done by these scholars. I Agree with their findings and also I came to realize that all these years why my learning technique is not effective to remember information in the long run and recall it whenever I need it. Also why structured learning is so critical to absorb vast amount of information and the research backed techniques mentioned in this book, for becoming effective learners . This book doesnโt give you shortcuts or cheat codes but essentially learning tools and techniques which are scientifically tested by these scholars. Also after reading this book we can also learn to appreciate these highly skilled people from all backgrounds for their grit , discipline and growth mindset ( covered in this book). For me , it is a learning curve and yes! real learning is struggle in the beginning but very very rewarding in the Long term. To summarise- this book is combination of research backed tools and techniques + (strategic planning _growth mindset _daily deliberate and disciplined efforts ! Which is evident from the experience of other effective learners). Formal (Academic- time table based , testing , labs , staff)learning may end (lecturers , professors , institution , labs , scoresheets , etc are usually unavailable after leaving them )after leaving the institution but real learning never ends , it is continuous processโฆ.!

A Game-Changer for Learning Anything
โMake It Stickโ is hands down one of the most impactful books Iโve read on learning. Instead of the usual โstudy harderโ advice, it dives into evidence-based strategies backed by cognitive psychologyโshowing exactly how our brains retain information. The best part? The techniques are simple but powerful. Spaced repetition, retrieval practice, interleaving, and making mistakes (then correcting them) arenโt just theoriesโthey actually work. Since applying these methods, Iโve noticed a huge difference in how much I remember and how confident I feel when recalling information. The writing is clear, engaging, and full of real-world stories that make the science approachable. Whether youโre a student, professional, or lifelong learner, this book gives you tools to truly learn smarter, not just longer. A must-read if you want to stop cramming and start learning in a way that sticks!

India only book sold to Australia
Book said for sale in India only despite me buying from Australia and still had price tag of $5 on it from another supplier. Book is of lower quality and looks like it will fall apart. Sold as an arbitrage item to make a profit, the legality of this is questionable

Is okay for the price but it is somewhat misleading on the publication date
When I was looking to buy this book, I saw the publication date as 1st Jan 2023 and that made me thought this was a 2nd ed because the 1st ed was published in 2014. When I received it, I realised it is a cheaper copy only allowed to be sold in certain countries but based on the contents of the book published in 2014. The publication of 2023 is completely false advertising. Despite that, for the price you paid, is a decent book.

Good reference book
It's not a book that is prescriptive i.e. gives you step by step instructions on how to takes notes or set up mnemonic systems but what it does is point you in the direction to develop your own personal systems and approach to learning based on the high performers they have studied. It's very interesting but it needs to read in conjuction with other learning how to learn books.
