Q: recieved hanger 9 sock but cant figure out how to slip it over iron. there is no opening to slip the iron into???

It doesn't slip over the iron. Lay the sock flat and set the iron on top of it. As you pull the draw strings it will wrap around the base of the iron, then just tie the draw string around the handle close to the iron head.

Q: Is this supposed to be used with the iron on? I've read the iron leaves black marks when used alone. Does this prevent that from happening?

I am unable to help you with your question, I use mine solely for encaustic art process. Seems it would be perfect for decals with the cover or an old cotton square between the iron and decal. Good Luck!

Probably. All the brands where the same size. Just remember...the sock only goes on the bottom of the iron, pulled tight with the draw string and tied around the handke neck.. Many reviewers seem to think you slip this over the entire iron head.
