Joytech Music Tesla Coil Acrylic Base Shell Arc Plasma Loudspeaker Wireless Transmission Experiment Desktop Toy Model (YS01)

I wanted a simple Tesla coil to show my AP Physics students when we talk about induction. This is relatively safe and shows the basics of high frequency high voltage. It's about the size of a soda can. It comes with a few discharge tips: a pointy stick like a small nail that screws onto the top (gets hot after 20-30 seconds so don't burn your fingers removing it), a thin wire attached to a small screw that screws onto the top and is loose at the top end so that the plasma can wiggle it around, and a spinner arm that balances on top. The sparks are about an inch long or less and nearly steady - not long bright white sparks like on big Tesla coils, but small purple plasma sparks. Music played via a laptop or phone headphone jack can be heard clearly if the volume is turned way up. A florescent tube lights up in your hand from about a foot away. It came as two main parts: the secondary simply screws onto the base. The base has the primary coil (about 4 turns), the driver circuitry, and a cooling fan. The acrylic parts give it a clean look and allow you to glance at the electrical components.

This little unit works great, its a very nice coil with several features. It breaks down quick and easy, the included accessory's all work. If I were to have anything negative to say it would be the power supply is very cheap and suspect. Cord is a bit short. I only use it for short duration, not sure how it would hold up to a longer run as it does heat up a bit. Kids love to play with it.

This is a very well made product. Everything is encased in clear plastic for protection, but yet you can easily see the guts. This is a fantastic desk piece and conversation starter. I love that it came with several accessories for demonstrations. The music feature works, but you do need to turn the volume on the MP3 player to max for the Tesla to play the music. No assembly was required. It was really well packed for shipping protection. I note that Joytech post a lot of very similar Tesla devices and their advertisements really do not distinguish between the various models. This was the most expensive of their options. They really need a table showing how the various models differ. This is a small tesla coil so while the sparks are quite visible they are only about an inch long. This is a relatively low frequency Tesla coil so touching the sparks could be painful. I have a much larger tesla coil which operates at a higher frequency and with proper technique I can safely touch it. I am reluctant to try touching the Joytech Tesla coil.

Quality is terrible. The sound is awful. It stopped working entirely after the third time turning it on. I hoped it was a plug issue. It wasn’t. I’ve used coils before with noble gas tubes to demonstrate electron excitation but this one was weak and after taking it apart at the base to diagnose the issue it was junk reused parts that were not assembled to last. I got what I paid for. Now I have e-junk and scraps.

I wasn’t sure what to expect because of the low cost and small size, but this is a very cool, true Tesla coil. The sound comes from the arc, it lights the included bulbs when placed nearby, and the little sparks and light patterns are beautiful to see. To light the bigger bulb, turn on the coil without an attachment on top (just for short periods of time without attachment, per instructions). But don’t get too close with the bulb - we burned a hole in our bulb and released the gas inside). Love this purchased. I am so impressed with it.

This is a cool little Tesla coil. A good learning tool that also adds decor to your living space and a conversation piece. Shipping was really fast as well. It was a bit disappointing to find out that the power supply/transformer didn’t work right out of the box. Excitingly Wanting to play with it, I was able to find another 24v power supply that just needed the plug wired on. So besides the junk 24v power supply it came with it’s a fun little unit.
