Its worth paying more for a good compass then less for one that may not work
Its worth paying more for a good compass then less for one that may not work... its not the type of item you don't want to have 100% faith in. and boy do Silva know how to make a good compass. The Ranger S 2016 is great, it has everything you would expect, all made to the best quality.

Questionable precision
This compass will do the job, but you have to be very careful to take observations with the compass needle in the same horizontal plane as the eye. You can take bearings holding the compass at other heights but they are not precise. By precision I mean that repeated observations of the same thing are a bit inconsistent. It is best to observe several times and take the mean. Most of the time it looks to me like something is slightly distorted. But in fairness, this is a hiker's compass, not a surveyor's instrument, so don't expect too much. I notice several reviewers complain that it is not possible to adjust this compass for magnetic variation (declination). That is not actually true. Of course, you must know the variation for your location, but all you have to do is rotate the dial with the scales on it so that magnetic north on the dial aligns with true north on the map. If your variation is west, add it to 000 degrees to get magnetic north, and if it is easterly, subtract the variation from 360 degrees to get magnetic north. Couldn't be simpler.

This Compass Pointed in the Wrong Direction
This is the first one star review I've ever submitted (the delivery was vey prompt though). Clearly it would seem that the compass needle had either become demagnetised or was never magnetised in manufacture. At first I thought it might have been a model for use in the Southern hemisphere, but that would only effect the settling angle (the needle being balanced to compensate for a different angle of dip, inclination) but I'm sure this is not the case. The compass displays all the attributes of an unmagnetised needle, that is very low torque (so a long time to settle in aligning with the earth's H flux lines) and then pointing almost 180deg the wrong way. Let's hope this is just a one-off batch problem, or perhaps an issue in transit where the item was packed next to very strong magnets effectively demagnetising the needle.
