Orbit57069N Rain and Freeze Sensor for Sprinkler Controllers

Outdoor portion of the rain sensor broke during a recent hail storm. This replacement was reasonably priced, took 5 minutes to install and works great with existing sprinkler system.

I am a Home Automation dealer/installer/programmer. I added this sensor to my own home's pretty elaborate automation system as a means to prevent the system from adding water to the swimming pool when it rains. Works like a charm (but had to add a small relay to invert the sensor's "Normally Closed = Dry" operation...no big deal). As for the sensor itself, its construction is decent, and it's very simple to adjust how much rain it takes to trip the sensor. It also has an adjustment that affects how long it takes for the sensor to dry out (and reset) after the rain stops. All in all, I'm very happy with this sensor. I'm pretty certain it would work well for its intended use with a landscape irrigation controller.

Simple to install unit. I added this when I installed an Orbit B-hyve controller since I wanted to prevent over watering my vineyard. The only complaint is this doesn't mention anything about wiring it to the "sensor" loop which is on the controller boxes. If you have a controller box with a sensor stop on the controller, disconnect the black wire which makes a loop and place one wire of this sensor on each side. Done. That's it. No programming to do. This basically disconnected the valves until the sensor dries out and allows connection again. It'd get 5 stars if the sensor or controller instruction manual mentioned the "sensor" wiring feature of the clock. Maybe I missed it, but I looked all over and didn't see anything.

I just installed this, and it is working well so far with the first rain. I am trying to save water and money in Southern California, which is the main reason for my purchase. I do have to say that installation would be much easier with two people, so if you have a friend around to help you, you will find this very helpful (mostly for testing the unit to see if it registering with the indoor sensor that lights up). The wireless rain sensor IS affected by walls, so you may find you need to place it much closer than 200 ft from the unit as the manual states you may. I placed the rain sensor 100 feet away, and it wouldn't work, due to a couple walls in the way. Moving the outdoor sensor in a more direct line of view of the sprinkler timer helped. The Rain Sensor works with any brand 24V (Low Voltage) Sprinkler Timer, whether the timer has preinstalled rain sensor screws for the wiring or not. If yours sprinkler timer doesn't, the manual tells you what to do - it's very simple. Batteries are supposed to last 2 years, and I already found replacements at my local drugstore. There is a nice low battery indicator as well. Thank you Orbit for helping us conserve water.

I installed this for my 9-unit condo complex with an existing Orbit sprinkler system. The directions are easy to follow and installation was a breeze. I'm hoping this reduces our water usage and bill!

I try to stay away from Orbit products - BeHive controller first product and now the Rain sensor with unsatisfactory product quality and/or support and

Unit attaches to gutter. If you hire someone to power wash your house or clean your gutters, they will destroy this device. Typically, these folks do not bother to watch the movement of their hoses.
