Can this attach to the intake without attaching a hose?

Is this needed if you have a window screen?

not needed if you have the two hoses exitinging inside the screen or if you have the window screen resting ontop of the hose mounting bracket.In other words,you only need that to prevent insects and bees and any other critters from entering the 2 hoses for the air conditioner,the "intake hose" and the "exhaust" hoses.Thats all

Will your ac fire snakes at you without this? sean m model’s review says this is necessary to keep snakes out.

Whynter ARC Prefilter

Fits, works, but I agree it should come with the air conditioner. It is pricey for a plastic ring with some screen on it. I added foam at the outside vent as a pre filter "Duck Brand 1285234 Replacement Air Conditioner Foam Filter, 24-Inch x 15-Inch x 1/4-Inch, 1-Pack"($2.66 cdn). Used scissors and cut out a piece to fit the outdoor vent. This was to keep bugs out of the vent tubing.

Fine Mesh Stops the Bugs!

Although a bit expensive, the mesh is high quality, and fine enough to stop no-see-ums from entering your air conditioner - where they would be difficult to clean out.
