I never ever write reviews of products, but the Tractive Cat Mini is an exception I find worthy.
I have had other trackers like the Bluetooth style ones you may attach to your keys, luggage, etc. that do not require a subscription to work. They work as designed, but they don't work well enough at the times you need it to the most. What they did do was send me on an emotional rollercoaster thinking the worst about my cat's whereabouts because I needed to pinpoint to the second where she was on a map. Instead of waiting and waiting for the tag locator to update, and there is no set interval for it to do that, you think the worst, and you may never know exactly if they don't return. And to me that is the worst part about losing a pet/member of family, is never knowing. Yet the burden of if there was something you could had done about it. I believe that cats are not to spend their lives indoors and they have instinctual urges they can't control to make them want to be free be it an indoor cat that escapes or one you take the risk of letting them outside during the day only. Its my belief to allow this and only hope my cat is savvy enough from life experience along with instincts to know there are predators present that given the opportunity to sustain their survival, may include ending hers . And my pet at almost 3 years old and living in a somewhat forested part of North Seattle with the occasional transient coyote, I take that risk and prepared for possibilities of letting my cat be a cat. So far, so good, but with much heartache at times. I was aware of the Tractive Cat Mini locator during all those times when using the other trackers and figured it probably worked in a similar fashion and probably just had some fancier app to download or something. But the main problem I had with giving the Tractive Cat Mini a chance was the requirement of a subscription for it to work. The upfront cost of the tracker was reasonable, but the yearly or monthly subscription was not. At least for my penny-pinching budget. Just another bill to pay. But I was so wrong. Being fed up with another emotional breakdown which luckily aways turned out for the best, I purchased the Tractive Cat Mini from Amazon while it was on sale for a promotion which made the price for me to be even more reasonable to offset the subscription price. I got it the next day and chose my subscription for a year. By the end of the 1st day of using it, I was kicking myself that I didn't do it sooner and how much heartache I could have avoided because this tracker did what I thought was not possible. It showed very clear detailed maps of where my cat was when I needed to know and to the second without delay. The app was very user friendly with not a bunch of settings to get lost in but straight forward and actually fun to use when friending with other cat owners in your local area. Or worldwide. But most importantly, the reliability of the device and the app combined which I have not had one problem with either after close to one year of using both. I now know what you get for the cost of the subscription and it could be 10x higher than what I paid for what you actually get from it. After 1 year using this device daily, I am extremely happy with this product, which I find to be rare these days. And if battery life is your concern like it was for me, it all depends on your cat. For myself, my cat is 50/50 indoor outdoor cat with a 10-block territory which because of the tracker I now know, the battery lasts 5 days or more and really has to do with the weather. That being said, it depends on if she is in the power saving zone or not. The battery can last even longer than 5 days in some cases and that's with full functionality with no compromising of its capabilities. To make sure it is charged is just a important part of my routine when getting a notification on my phone of battery getting low. And to me the best part of the Tractive app is being able to draw a perimeter over the satellite map of spots you do not want your pet to enter and getting a notification on your phone immediately if they cross into it and also a notification when the exit. My cat is also probably considered petite in body size at 11ish pounds and since the 1st hour of wearing the device on her collar, she was never uncomfortable about its size. It also works great in rural areas and responds comparative in the same way your phone makes or receives calls/texts because of signal strength or network. To end this review, again which I never do, I assure you, nobody coerced me, paid me anything, offered me product to spend the time to write this, but these are my true thoughts and feelings on how this product has improved my life along with my pets life (unknowingly of course) to have the peace of mind of your family members well-being and the ability to intervene at the drop of a hat at the time you need to the most. The whole package of what you get from this product by Tractive is money well spent and I guarantee you will not look back making you a long-time customer as long as you have a dog or cat because all the others can't touch this one by a mile. And any upcoming or 2.0 versions will only be better than already great version of what you can already get. But credit is due when your expectations are exceeded after using a product to make an accurate and educated review like I am doing now so you can learn from my mistakes and to support a company making a great product that actually frees your mind, or better yet, gives you peace of mind of your furry friend which we can all agree is priceless. Thank you Tractive!

Tractive not attractive in many ways! AWFUL GPS
1. The battery life on the device sucks. And it sucks even more because the makers of this created a way to "save battery" by asking users to set up a Power Saving Zone. This requires setting up your home wi-fi to search for your pet via bluetooth under a tab called FIND NEARBY. They wanted to do the same thing the makers of Tile, Airtag and Galaxy Smartag did. However Tile , Airtag, etc. do not force you to have your phone GPS on at all times for this Power Safe Zone to work just via BLUETOOTH. Yet Tractive does which in turn extends the device's battery and instead drains your phone battery. Why Tractive engineers force having phone GPS on with a feature that doesn't find the pet via GPS. Strange! 2. The IRONY of all the above is that the 2nd way Tractive allows you to track your pet is via Google GPS with a tab called LIVE. You can ONLY use the LIVE tab if you are far away from your home's wi-fi Power Saving Zone since this feature really uses just GPS. Even turning off wi-fi on your phone WON'T allow you to use LIVE. One could think who cares to use LIVE via GPS if the cat is at home. EXCEPT if you set up Power Safe Zone it seems 70% of the time you cannot track the cat with FIND NEARBY. In other words setting Power Safe Zone messes up the app and your cat is untraceable . So you won't know if cat left the house! I kept thinking it was a fluke . Attempted every solution to a lame girl. Erase cache on app, log in and out of the app, get close to the pet. ONLY SOLUTION was to erase the Wi-fi Power Saving Zone . 3. After erasing the unusable "power saving zone" the battery on the device lasted about 40 hours. It takes around 3 hours for the device's battery to charge. A cat or dog can get lost during this time. So I STRONGLY ADVICE swapping your pet to a temporarily Airtag if you have an Iphone or a Smarttag PLUS if you have a newer Samsung Galaxy. These bluetooth trackers are pretty accurate and have longer range bluetooth capability than Tractive. You are not required to have GPS enabled on your phone at all times to track your pet via bluetooth since they are not GPS trackers. They also don't require a subscription. Having them wear something is better than nothing unless you want to purchase 2 Tractives devices AND pay 2 subscriptions for just 1 pet while one of the devices is charging. But wait read more... 4. Tractive Ring tone is very low. The Galaxy Smartag Plus and Tile ring tone are a lot louder. You better wear a hearing aid to find your pet via the Tractive ring tone. 5. While learning the Tractive app found an "interesting" button called Heat and Tracemap. This button supposedly shows where your cat has been. Somehow it showed my cat had moved 407 feet. Not sure how this could have happened. Unless my cat has invisible levitating powers unbeknown to me. The device was on my lap then on my cat who sat 5 feet away from me. Another fluke! 6. Tractive has a tab called Virtual Fences. I live in a 4000 + sq foot home with 80 feet length of AC area. Was getting excited something finally would be of use in this app. Wanted to know if my cat jumped out in the pool, yard or escaped. EXCEPT when setting the perimeter around my home I kept getting a warning saying: " The Virtual Fence is Too Small" . What? 7. Tractive requires you to pay RIGHT AWAY for a subscription. You don't even get a 1 day free trial test. Buy the device and be ready to pay upfront 1 year. Yes feel free to waste your time asking for your money back because we all have lots of it to spare trying to recover the $ that took us time to make. Dear Garmin please start making GPS devices for cats. You guys are the gurus of anything GPS. For now I will be testing the Marco Polo tracker and use this Tractive to track coons and possums inside my garbage can instead. That may be the only place this stupid device works.

Tractive Mini for Cats
UPDATE: I've had this same little device going on 4 years. I know some people say it's safer to keep your animals indoors and most of my cats are content to live this way, but Osiris is different. I know the dangers, but I refuse to make my home his prison if he has a strong desire to explore his natural instinct of daily fresh air, sunshine, and visiting his neighborhood friends (human and furry alike). I used to always worry when he was outside during the day because I was always unsure where he was and if he was OK. Now all I have to do is pull up the app and it let's me know down to the pin point on a map. I have a virtual fence set up that he mostly knows to stay in, but if he wanders beyond it I receive a text immediately and am able to retrieve him if needed. The app also shows his track record of where he has been in the past 24 hours, highlighting in green his exact traveled path and red where he's spent long periods of time. This way I can get an idea if his favorite places too if he's not in plain sight. The app tracks his activity and sleep and even compares it to local or other Tractive kitties. If someone finds him, they can press the button on the device which alerts my phone. (He has a tag with his name, address, and my phone number also.) When its dinner time (before the sun goes down in the evening) he's usually waiting by the back door, but if he's not there I know to look up his location and I can manually get him to come in. A few months ago, he had snuck into the neighbor's garage to greet her coming home and she wasn't aware that he was still there and closed him in. If it hadn't been for Tractive, who knows how long he'd have been trapped in there or how long I'd go without sleep not knowing if he was OK. I cannot say enough good things about Tractive. It gives me peace of mind that I couldn't get with any other device. For the initial cost of the device and the yearly app fee, it is worth every penny. It is beyond the best purchase I have ever made and I can't thank the developers enough for it. All this time I've never had to replace it. It holds a charge well. I only have to charge it every few days and I do it overnight so it's all ready to go for him when we wake up. He seems so grateful that I allow him this pleasure, which in my opinion is his right. The size is not too big or heavy. He sleeps with it on most of the time and doesn't seem to mind it at all! He's acted like it was a natural part of him since I first put it on his collar. If you have a kitty like Osiris or a dog who likes to run, please do not hesitate to buy this for your pet! You will never regret it! ORIGINAL POST: I love this! I can see where my stubborn kitty is all the time and can set his boundaries and get notified when he strays too far. I call it his "ankle monitor" because he is now on permanent parole (he likes to escape and run if we don't let him out). We have the Tile as well which is nice and loud to hear where he is if he is in range of a few hundred feet. Of course the Tile is limited if you don't know where he is. When it's time to come home, now I know exactly where to find my boy.

Fantastic peace of mind
Almost 2 years later: Tractive is still the best tracker I could've chosen for my fur baby. In the summer, when she more active and wanders further from home, the tracker needs recharging every 2-3 days. In the colder / wetter weather, i often don't have to charge it more than once every couple of weeks because she stays in the power saving zone practically all the time. At this point, it still takes about 1-1.5 hours to charge from less than 10% to full. So no real impactful change there. Syl is just barely 10 lbs and very petite, but the size and weight of the tracker doesn't bother her. I use the more rubbr / elastic collar attachment and in the nearly 2 years we've had it, I've only needed to replace it once so far. I did purchase a 2-pack of them directly from tractive early on, so I was prepared. If they ever come out with an even smaller version, I'd definitely upgrade, but I'm a Tractive customer for life now. I know where Sylphrena is anytime. When she's in the power saving zone, I admit it can take a few extra minutes to track her using the Bluetooth radar, but if she's in the safe zone, I'm generally not worried about finding her exact location. I know her routines, her territory, how healthy she is based on other cats of her type and age. I can even see how her activity compares with other Tractive-wearing cats in my area. These last 2 years have changed our lives from constant worry and scares to health, love, and happiness for us both! -------- Original review: I live out in a more rural area, with a wildlife reserve just past my backyard. We let our animals go outside and in as they like, but the cats are not at all hindered by the fence. Obviously. One of my cats, Sylphrena, tends to roam further than the others, and every once in a while wouldn't make a home appearance for a couple of days. I was constantly worrying... what if something got her? I'd never know! So after a very recent scare, we bought Tractive. Now I can see where she is whenever I start worrying. I can see a snapshot of where she went all day, and it even shows me her sleep and activity patterns! If you turn off the power saving option, the battery drops below 20% within 2.5 days. With power saving on and Sylly staying fairly close to home, I haven't yet had to charge it (it's about 45% right now) and it's been about 4 days since the last charge. And it only takes about an hour to charge up from teens to full! So we only have to trap the furbabies in for a short time to keep Sylly up and running on the go! To me, this is definitely worth the cost and subscription. But only you can decide what's right for you and your furbaby. The Tractive unit and subscription is per pet, so I'm really glad I only need to keep tabs on 1, but I would gladly foot the bill for another if needed because now I don't have to wonder where she disappeared to!

Great for rural users. Needs app tweaks and a web site user guide on getting your cat used to it.
Good product. Main advantage is for rural users because competitor products depend on wifi access to report location. In rural areas there is often no wifi. Big thumbs up for that. Regarding the subscription fee: No one likes it but because this tracker uses cell phone networks for data, it's a necessary fee and not too overinflated (at present). Improvements needed: in "power save" mode (when it's in range of your home wifi) the app won't let you enable GPS location tracking; it forces you to use the Bluetooth "radar". Just because it's in wifi range doesn't mean it's in range of Bluetooth, so the Bluetooth "radar" doesn't work and I can't find my cat. If I need to find my cat in a hurry, I need precise location. IOW: They're insulting me by assuming I'm too stupid to make a reasonable decision to burn more battery power. Usage tips that they should have on the web site: (1) Charge daily. They claim battery life of up to 5 days (probably in the "power save" mode), but if you let your cat out with only a 25% charge and it goes missing, the battery may die before you know the cat is missing. (2) Tips on getting your cat used to wearing the device: (a) Make sure the collar isn't too tight (if you can fit two fingers under it it's not too tight) or too loose (too loose allows the cat to get its lower jaw stuck under the collar - very bad); (b) Watch the cat continuously when first putting on the collar. If it's too loose and gets it's jaw under the collar you need to remove it immediately. (c) Expect some freaking out at first. Depending on the cat you may need to put on just the collar strap until it gets used to a collar. (d) Associate the collar with positive experiences: On to go outside, off when inside. Praise and reward them each time. (e) Consistency is critical during the initial acclimation period. ALWAYS on before going out. ALWAYS praise and reward for good behavior.

Short battery life, good GPS
Tldr; Biggest complaints: -battery life way too short (3-4 days) this is my biggest complaint -sound feature too quiet, can't really hear it -live tracking, light/sound eat up battery life quickly -monthly fee for GPS tracking, though not too pricey The good: -gps works well -light made her easier to find in the dark -like the history tracking so I can see where she's stuck and for how long -charges quickly -home base/virtual fences with notifications -can share with my partner so we can both track the cat -Reasonably priced device and monthly fee for service -easy to put on collar anddont need to take her collar off to charge every time, it just pops off the base and pops back on -lightweight enough, my cat is about 8lbs with a tiny neck, it doesn't seem to heavy and doesn't bother her ----- Battery life gets me about 3-4 days. I had to use the light/sound to find my twice. The light is helpful if it's dark outside but it's not super bright. The sound is waaaaayyyy to quiet, I could barely hear it in the same room but might be helpful if you only need to find your cat within a room. Sound was not helpful for me to find her in the neighbors crawlspace. The sound does freak her out though so she started moving around instead of hunkering down where I couldn't see her, so that was kind of helpful. The tracking is pretty good. I enjoy watching where my cat goes all day and to see how far she roams at night. It was helpful to find her, she got stuck under two different neighbors crawlspaces. We knew she was stuck because we could see she had been in one small area all day. Both times the tracker led us to the right house. The live gps, light and sound features do use the battery really quickly though, so use sparingly if your cat is really lost. I'm not sure if any better options so for now this will do but the battery Life is the biggest drawback. Didn't want to go with airtag because we don't have apple. Like that it's actually GPS.

Great buy to keep an eye on kitty, just wished the silicone holder would be stronger.
I am very happy with the Tractive tracker I bought for my foster cat Leo. We have been using it for 3 weeks at the time of this review (September 2025). We live in a quiet neighborhood with nice yards and nice neighbors. He likes to visit them. I don't like having cats roaming but he is this kind of cat. He likes people. With the tracker on I know where he is at anytime which gives me a peace of mind. My foster cat is a tall and strong boy (14 lbs). He has a large neck and large cheeks (was neutered at age 8). The tracker looks not big on him and he never minded it (see picture). I can imagine it might be a bit heavy or uncomfortable for a regular size or smaller size cat. Thinking of it, I would fit it on an harness instead of a collar for a smaller cat. The tracker comes with a collar which to me was not wide enough to be comfortable to wear, especially with the weight of the tracker. I attached the tracker to a wider collar (blue fabric dog collar, break away of course). The tracker is attached to the collar via a silicone holder which started tearing after two weeks of utilization (See pictures). This happened because you have to remove the tracker from the silicone holder to charge the tracker (Tractive people need to rethink this one to allow charging without having to remove from the fragile silicone holder ). I found some compatible silicone holder on Amazon for replacement which are fine. I just would have expected the product to last longer than 2 weeks or please Tractive give 2 or 3 silicone holders with the initial purchase. The battery life is great for us as we charge the tracker each time Leo comes back home. With me constantly hitting the live tracking, the battery never went below 80% over an afternoon of playtime (4hrs). You can set up a power saving zone to give a break to the battery when kitty is at home or close enough. Signal strength is great. Accuracy and speed are great too. When you start live tracking you may have to wait 20 seconds or so for the app to get the data and populate the map. It typically shows you the path kitty was on in the last five minutes or so and then it shows you kitty's whereabout/current position every few seconds like clockwork and draw a pattern. There are additional functionalities in the app. Like "history" so you can look what you cat was up to yesterday. If you look at all the history, you may see your kitty's routine walk. You can also set "escape alerts" to know when kitty is away from your comfort zone. There is also a leaderboard on which all the local kitties compete on which is the most active (in minutes). It's cute. For the GPS to work you need to buy a cellular plan. I bought the yearly plan which ends up costing me $10ish per month. It's really inexpensive and totally worth it even if you are on a tight budget. I will recommend this tracker to his new pet parents.

Tracker will refuse to work/update for upwards of 8 hours at a time.
This thing sucks. My cat has broken free of this collar five times now, and every time it’s been an ordeal to get it back. I think once out of those five times I was able to see exactly where it was and retrieve it easily. The other four times, I had to wait hours for the GPS to hopefully update, and even then it would be off by dozens of feet, which is not insignificant when searching a field for a small cat collar. Nine times out of ten, the live tracking feature just will not work at all. I find myself having to re-attempt to live track every ten minutes for hours, often in vain, requiring me to scan my yard and my neighbors’ yards with the hopes that the Bluetooth tracking function will decide to work, even though its range seems to max out at about 15 feet. There’s nothing around me but suburbs and pastures, yet the GPS functionality never works. The home/safe zone functionality is also terrible, but the collar’s battery dies way too fast without it on. It will connect to your network to save battery, but often it will do so at a distance where it can’t actually connect to the internet, so it will say your cat’s home when really it’s 80 feet away. But when it’s connected to Wi-Fi, you can’t use the GPS feature. So in practice, if your cat is farther than 40 feet away from your router but less than 200 feet away, this product just doesn’t work. If your cat is like mine, that exact range of distance is exactly where he spends most of his outside time. The battery lasts a few days, but you have to charge it every day or two. Otherwise, you run the risk of it dying during a period where it refuses to actually track itself. I’d say, on average, it takes about eight hours for me to retrieve this collar once my cat has gotten it snagged somewhere, and that’s usually an extremely stressful eight hours since you’re racing the clock because the battery drains so fast. If the tracker is connected to my Wi-Fi when it’s lost, I usually have to go in the app settings and turn off the safe zone or disconnect my router and hope/wait that the collar updates itself in a timely manner, but it never does. Then, upon retrieval, you have to go back into the app and reset your power saving zone/safe zone. They couldn’t have put a button on the app to temporarily disable the extremely limiting power saving zone? How did no one at the company see any of this as a problem? I haven’t tried any other GPS collar, but they have to be better than this. Only buy this if, for whatever reason, you’re okay with buying a product that will not work for hours. I’ve had it say something to the effect of “signal is weak, collar might be in a building,” just to find it after searching for hours right in the open. I’m writing this because it looks like I’m bound to be in the market for a new GPS collar soon, as my cat snagged this one again and it hasn’t updated for nine hours, with the last location it tracked him at being 200 feet away from my home/safe zone, despite it claiming his tracker is literally in my house. And of course, all of this is happening with the collar at 20% battery. I don’t know what Temu GPS chip/antenna they put in this thing, but it can’t even get a signal through cardboard.
