Victron Energy SmartSolar MPPT Solar Charge Controller 100V, 20A, 48V

This is a very nice, premium controller. High quality, app is nice, and works with Home Assistant when you use a ESP32 running a bluetooth gateway to connect. No problems there. HOWEVER. The unit is rated for 12/24 and 48 volt batteries and solar panels. Ok, not a problem. However at 48 volts you CANNOT put loads on the output safely. The instructions say in the fine print to not exceed 1 amp draws on the load at 48 and there is NO overcurrent to prevent this. What happened to mine was I had a 5 amp load that worked at first but after 2 days the unit blew its fuse. Went out to the shed, checked it, replaced the fuse with a 25 amp rated fuss, reconnected, and watched a small fireball shoot out as the fuse blew again. Internally the FETs are shorted. And this is another problem; the internal fuse on this unit is 25 amps but is an automoblie rated fuse. Which should not be used at above 30 volts. And this can do 48 volts. Fortunately my load center is protected by a 35 amp fuse rated for 600 volts DC. That didn't blow because the 25a one did, but if an arc formed that would be the only thing keeping the unit from becoming a bad problem. Moral: Always properly fuse your batteries to NEC standards. Never count on a little automobile fuse. And in this case, don't use the load output if you're running 48 volts. Victron, I'm not returning it because it was my fault, but this is kind of a design.... thing to think about. Feel free to drop me a line.

Does what it should and works great. Can't speak to durability but mounting and the app are great. Definitely a smaller unit

Easy to set up, and the built-in Bluetooth makes monitoring and adjusting charging settings simple. It works reliably with my solar panel and keeps my AGM battery properly maintained.

Victron is the best, most reliable as always, best app and functions within app, will buy again

I love the BlueTooth feature. This Victron charges up my (2.1 Kwh NMC) battery super Fast! Using 800W of ECOFLOW PV, it keeps my battery exactly (50.15v) where I set it. Modern Victron MPPT technology exactly is what I need to is replace my old PWM chargers. It runs cool (about 90F, no fan required) and the price is amazing compared to my old PWM brand. Configuration is very easy with the app. The information charts/graphs the app provides is more than enough to fine-tune my system for best performance.

Work as expected, accessories are expensive. App works thru bluetooth not wi-fi (unless you buy more stuff). The app is good, and was easy to setup and use.

This thing has been rock solid for months in sunny Southern California. I like the ability to monitor via Bluetooth on my phone, though I wish there was a Windows application too. I have this paired with a 75/15 controller using VE.Smart networking, charging my 24v LiFePO4 battery bank that powers my office. It's great that I started with the bank at 12v, but wanted to get more power out of my solar panels so I switched to 24v and MPPT controller just works with the new battery profile. There was no hassle to switch over, just plug and play and pick a different profile in the app.

The good: Charging algorithm works very well, at least with lithium iron phosphate batteries. Charge termination is handled gracefully, unlike others I tested from Renogy and others. It is compact, requiring little space on a crowded electrical panel. The app is great, and provides a lot of information and allowing customization of charging parameters if you so desire, all wirelessly via Bluetooth. The design engineers did a great job, but often times excellent electrical/firmware design is not enough to make an excellent product… The Bad Part1: The screw terminals need to go. Now that this unit is heavily discounted, I suspect that it is on the way out for a re-design. I’ve had my original unit running in my van for over 2 years, charging 200Ah of LiFePO4 with 300W of PV panels, all working flawlessly until it didn’t. The culprit was the screw terminals. The battery negative terminal melted to the point that the screw could not be budged. Apparently there was enough resistance in the connection, even at a maximum of 20A, to create enough heat to melt the plastic around the screw. I was determined to fix the thing, just out of principle that such a stupid design flaw should not render this otherwise excellent charge controller useless. My solution was to directly solder a 10Ga wire to the solder pad that the (-) terminal connected to. I got it done, but it wasn’t easy; this leads to The Bad Part 2: The Bad Part 2: This has to do with the evil business model- the enclosure is glued on, never to be opened again, negating attempts at repair. Not even Victron can repair the unit; send a defective unit in for repair under warranty, and they throw it away. As users of clean solar energy, that business model doesn’t sound right, does it? It wasn’t hard to find a hack, and I had the thing open in minutes, and was able to make the repair. However that bad taste of throw-away mentality lingers… Yes, I did buy a second unit as a spare. Yes, I made sure that I put it through the wringer before the return window closed. Yes, it worked beautifully. I ran it for hours at full capacity, 20A to the battery, 280W at the PV input. I made sure the screw terminals were very tight, and regularly monitored the wires for heating. If it wasn’t heavily discounted, and if I was building the electrical system from the start I would have looked at alternatives. For now I have a spare in case the first unit dies for good.

Had eerst de 75/15 Victron 4mm² aansluiting. gekocht maar die is voor de koeling gevuld met kanariezand. Dach al! waar komt dat zand vandaan. Voor iets meer nu de 100/30 van Victron met koelribben. Veel degelijker. Voor max 440Wp paneel En invoer je kunt 6 mm² kabel gebruiken. ( Voor de camper bus. )

100% recommended if anybody need or think to buy this product or any product from victron. These are very reliable. I appreciate to victron brand to make great product in every catagory. And thanks. In last, i request to brand to keep price genuine, because sometimes these are very expensive on amazon i saw and thanks for this product. 🫡
