This thing indeed does work.
The item works pretty much as I expected and I received what I ordered. What I learned after I received it, was this was a fine grit diamond tapered rod and that course grit and medium grit Diamond Serrated Sharpeners were also available from DMT. Though I did accomplish great results on my serrated knives, the task may have been quicker with a courser grit. Long story short I Got R Done!

top quality, perfect for serrated blades!
We had picked this up to sharpen some serrated knives that just weren't cutting it anymore (ha!). We were pleased to find that the taper on this sharpener allowed us to dress multiple sized serrations, and it brought the blades to a razor sharp level. There had been chips in the serrations, and those have been refiled and sharpened to the point that you would never know they were an issue. This thing really does its job well. An excellent product that I would purchase again!

precision file that leaves to marks on piece.
I like using this to polish and remove burrs from small mechanical parts. You can also use for sharpening serrated knives. I did snap off the handle but the DMT company stepped up and made it right. You just cannot lean on it too hard while using. Much much better than a stone and you can use it as a very precision file so it's versatile. Highly recommended.

It's DMT, so it's Great
I have multiple DMT products, and all are uniformly great, from 120 grit 8" stones to 8000 grit 8" stones. This conical sharpener works well for serated knives, as well as other tasks that might need a round sharpening or "filing". The handles fold around it in storage, and fold in the other direction to expose the stone. The handle is easy to hold when using. For sharpening knives, I prefer a slight stream of water, to keep the stone clean. I also keep some DMT flat "files" for touching up kitchen knives. I have never had less than perfection from DMT.

Broke immediately
I carefully removed product from clamshell packaging. The handles wouldn't budge for love or money. No instructions on how properly to open. Eventually I shrugged, tried to pry open from non-hinge end, wound up in three irreparable pieces. Why does it need a flimsy folding handle anyway? Returned it to Amazon the next day, fortunately easy to do. How about a fixed handle on one end? Jeez, not only over-engineered by poorly engineered. Waste of a good file.

You need to know how to use a diamond hone to have success with this tool
1st the dislikes, as I have seen in many of this brand of diamond sharpeners, the weak point in the assembly has always been the hinging apparatus of the sharpener's plastic cover. You can find other reviews which will back up this criticism, but the sharpener itself will hone the insides of single hole leather punches quite nicely. You have to understand that using any diamond hone or sharpener requires a light touch to function properly. The old theory with some folks was "if it sharpens at all, it will sharpen "faster" with a heavier pressure on the surface of the stone or hone. That simply is NOT generally true. The industrial diamond dust used on most diamond plates and specialty sharpeners and hones will crush and wear away instead of doing what they were meant to do if used correctly. They will still cut into steel; they simply will have a much shorter lifespan if you use a heavy hand on them while trying to muscle through a sharpening procedure. I learned many years ago that patience is required to do almost any kind of manual sharpening if you want to realize the results of working the edged tool into a proper cutting tool which will last a lifetime if taken care of with periodic honing and proper storage of the cutting edge to protect it from unforeseen "accidents" to the cutting surface. With that said, I would recommend this hone for those who will be using it in a situation where it isn't required to open and close the rather flimsy plastic cover very often. I have mine in an open position and lying on my workbench, where I usually sharpen or touch up all of my edged tools before I use them. And I do this EACH time I use them. A personal choice I make to have a tool slice through leather like cutting warm butter is the only way to get the cut surface as smooth as possible, and a few passes on a strop before using the tool will give back a proper cut each time it is used.
