is this a Freznel lens?

YES. Initially they bribed me into a glowing review by offering a second item for free. As I came to realize how bad the freznel lens is, I have not used the thing at all. I bought another Magnipros item that SHOWED A CLEAR LENS, and it also is the freznel lens. I HAVE TRIED TO CONTACT THEM 4-5 TIMES AND GOTTEN NO RESPONSE. I will NEVER again deal with this company.

does this magnify when placed directly on the page?

You need to position this page magnifier 2" to 4"(adjust distance to which gives you the best result) above the small prints/objects in order to have optimal magnifying effect.

What is the best distance to hold it above the page? If held more than 6 inches from the page, will it still be magnified clearly? Page size max?

The best distance can be vary from person to person, generally, the best magnifying result would be anywhere from 2" to 4.5" above the objects/small prints, the point is to see objects/small prints clearly, some people see clearly and feel most comfortable for their eyes with distance 2.5" while other may find 3.5" to 4".
