True Grit (1969) [Blu-ray][Region Free]

This review is for the Paramount Home Entertainment BLURAY released 2011. I suppose "perfection", like beauty, lies in the eye of the beholder. Some reviewers have found fault with the quality of this BluRay, but I thought it was excellent. Some of the locations look absolutely stunning, and the whole film was a joy to watch. Good optional subtitles and extras (Commentary, docs etc.) at a VFM price mean this is well worth buying even if, like me, you already have the film on DVD. The film remains high on my list of favourite westerns, directed by a master, Henry Hathaway, with performences to match - Some quarrel with the choice of Kim Darby, but to me she carries the film with her very feisty performence (tho I concede some may have found her annoying!). This does not detract from Wayne's towering performence - his best? along with RED RIVER/SEARCHERS/YELLOW RIBBON?), and a support cast that must have been carefully handpicked - Jeremy Slate. Dennis Hopper, John Fiedler, James Westerfield, Ron Soble, John Doucette, Myron Healey, Strother Martin, Jeff Corey, and stealing every scene, Robert Duvall as "Lucky" Ned Pepper. Funny, violent, moving, and with heart, this is a western/film to treasure. Do try this BluRay. I am sure you won't be disapointed (I hope!).

Bought this as it has always been a favourite film of mine and wanted a copy in blu-ray.

Excellent DVD!

It`s no secret that this was the movie that restarted John Wayne`s career after his misstep with “The Green Berets”; an adaptation of the Charles Portis western novel, it has become something of an iconic example of the genre. It was known to have been a problematic production with disagreements and artistic differences between some of the cast and the director, but it`s an enjoyable movie and it got a number of nominations and awards – including an Oscar for Wayne. The standard UK DVD release has no extras; English subtitles are available if required.

Strapping on an eye patch and gun belt, John Wayne finally won a well deserved Oscar for this entertaining Western. Wayne stars as Rooster Cogburn, a rough and tough marshall hired by a young girl to go into Indian territory and track down her father's murderer. His portrayal is straight from the golden age of the Western, all larger than life and heroic, and most of all thoroughly entertaining! This is a classic Western, with all the essential elements. There is the main adventure, but leavened with a strong sense of humour, especially the banter and interplay between the three leads. The villains are suitably villainous, the action set pieces (including the final grand showdown) are big and entertaining, and all in all it is a fun film to watch. It is let down a little by the wooden acting of Kim Darby and Glen Campbell as Wayne's co stars, but in a way this just serves to make Wayne seem even better. This 2009 John Wayne Collection Paramount release is pretty good. A widescreen presentation with a decent transfer and a mono soundtrack that sounds OK. There are no extras. A decent presentation of a classic film.

True Grit Is a classic! and I don't mean the new one! I love the music, the humour,everything about It really, me and my husband have always loved It. John Wayne Is the original and the best Rooster, he comes over as a loveble rougue, and the actors play of each other really well, and Glen Campbell has a lovely voice he showed himself to be a good actor aswell, excellent acting by Kim Darby who played Matty Ross bent on getting revenge on the man called Tom Chaney,Who shot her father,and nothing and no one Including Rooster, and Mr LaBeof the Texan Ranger ( Glen Campbell) was going to stop her, Inspite of them trying to stop her going with them to get Chaney, as she say's "I Payed good money" she hired Rooster to go and track Chaney down in the Indian territory,she was determined, well any way If you want the best True Grit buy the 1969 version you will not be disapointed. we have watched the new one but did not enjoy It, John Wayne as Rooster Is an hard act to follow,In fact the whole film Is an hard act to follow.

True Grit is one of my ALL time favourite films, and to be frank, the BluRay is a rather average affair. Foreground shots are generally crisp and look excellent, generally! Longshots are generally lacking detail and look flat. And the shots inbetween are very variable indeed. The colours range from over saturated to under saturated in a blink in some shots. One of the stars of this film is the scenery which never looks as good as it should on this transfer. Considering the sharpness of some of the scenes I believe this to be a rather lazy transfer, that was thrown together to coincide with (and cash in on!) the release of the Coen Bros version.

True Grit is a stylized Western about a girl (Matty Ross, played with conviction by Kim Darby) who loves her father very much. He left behind his wife and children and rode out with another man on some business. Sometime during a card game this man, Tom Chaney (Jeff Corey), got drunk. The father showed the man out who then brandished a rifle. While trying to get the gun away, Tom fired, killing her father, and ran off into the woods. I can certainly see how this could be upsetting for this girl but she goes through so much! Although she tries to be calm and insistent about getting her way, it's more interesting where her barrier cracks -- when she witnesses a hanging, when she sees her dad in a pine box -- and when she sees her apparent savior, in the form of Rooster Cogburn, (rough tough, and all John Wayne) betray her trust (again, apparently). It's just too much. Great story! It was fun to see this late sixties Western at a time when the western as a genre was beginning to wane. Television was full of westerns then, and they were all going off the air -- The Virginian, Gunsmoke, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, etc., etc. John Wayne epitomized all these gun-toting tough guys. But what was different about John Wayne's portrayal from these gentlemen was his willingness to break the rules to get what he wanted, whether it be a criminal, another bottle of whiskey, or saving a girl from a pit of rattlers, no matter what! And Robert Duval as the bad guy -- great acting! And our girl, played by Kim Darby, was the same. "She reminds me -- of me!" The story moves at a quick pace after a bit of a slow start. The girl meets a Texas ranger and doesn't think much of him -- played by crooner Glen Campbell. I've never liked Glen, then or now. His stilted acting was a bit much. But his portrayal of a man who wanted nothing to do with this girl and giving her a good spanking -- this was realistic if unsettling. Overall, True Grit is a western, one with real human experience, some conflict, lots of gun action and horse-riding. A girl who wants revenge, a man who wants justice. A great example of the wild western justice, a bit Hollywood-ized, and fun to watch! Great film! I have yet to watch the current remake (2011) and look forward to a comparison when I check it out. Cast & Crew: The director is Henry Hathaway, maker of such hits as How The West Was Won (1962) How the West Was Won (Three-Disc Special Edition) , and Mae West's Go West, Young Man (1936) GO WEST YOUNG MAN among many American westerns over his 40 plus year career! It was surprising to me how many of the secondary characters have also appeared in the original Star Trek. Excellent classic!

One of John Wayne's best westerns. Wayne plays Rooster Cogburn, a feisty ornery marshal. Kim Darby's is excellent in her role, her father is killed and she hires Wayne to get the murderer. She hires Wayne because he displays "True Grit", along the way they meet Glenn Campbell who is a Texas Ranger also wanting the killer and if he returns him he gets a $1,500 reward. Wayne rightly won an Oscar for his role, he followed it up with Rooster Cogburn with Katherine Hepburn. Highly recommended and all 3 were excellent in their roles. Great climatic scene with Wayne holding reins in his teeth, one hand with Winchester the other with a pistol as he charges the bad guys. Some extras with interviews with Darby and Campbell.
