Penny Marshall's popular 1992 comedy sheds light on a little-known chapter of American sports history with its story of a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The league was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men's baseball teams. The AAGPBL continued after the war (until 1954), and Marshall's movie depicts the league in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregonian sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism. They're all a bunch of underdogs, and Marshall (with a witty script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) does a fine job of establishing a colorful team of supporting players including Madonna and (in her movie debut) Rosie O'Donnell. It's a conventional Hollywood sports story (Marshall's never been one to take dramatic risks), but the stellar cast is delightful, and the movie's filled with memorable moments, witty dialogue, and agreeable sentiment. And just remember: there's no crying in baseball! --Jeff Shannon Tom Hanks and Geena Davis star in this big-league comedy based on the real-life exploits of the All-American Girls Baseball League. Review: Price - Good movie Review: One of my favorite - Probably the best performance by Madonna ever, this movie is so full of nostalgia. World War II & baseball are a great combination

Definitely Worth A Double Dip
The 4K video compared to the original Blu-Ray was quite an upgrade. I did not view the included Blu ray 1080p disc. The film now has a mature and very stable picture with beautiful color. I can tell the disc has a very healthy bit rate. The transfer has unobtrusive fine grain throughout without clumping. The one exception was unfortunately the opening scene in a dark interior. I was just about to be super disappointed because of that first scene, but it never disappointed after the first 5 minutes. If you have ever seen the 4K presentation of "Terms of Endearment", it is very similar - and probably has the similar film stock. The image doesn't sparkle like a newer film, but has a nostalgic look - appropriate for such a period piece. The Atmos soundtrack was super clear with dialogue coming through loud and clear. I don't have the spatial channels, but as per usual, the 7.1 fold down displays an improved audio experience. Since there are no action movie opportunities for a flashy sound design, you'll have to be happy in hearing spaciousness in the music soundtrack and the occasional motorized vehicles or crowd cheers. I highly recommend this purchase. You won't be disappointed!

What's there not to love!
Seriously, what's not to love? Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty, and best of all, directed by 'Laverne' herself- Penny Marshall. What an awesome movie. I will not get into the nitty-gritty of it, but if you love baseball, good acting, and great directing, this movie is for you. This is a feel-good movie and can be played anytime. This means that you shouldn't worry about offending your guests or anything like that. Trust me, I had a gathering and I had 'Something About Mary' playing in the background, and guess what, some people got offended. Not my friends, but the plus 1 or 2 that they brought. So, back to this, get it in 4K. The picture is vivid and so awesome to watch. The sound is super clear and crisp and you will love watching this in this format. On the fence? Because you have a copy in DVD and Blu-ray already? I do too. Just get it in 4K. Worth it.

A Fine Tribute to a Group of Remarkable Women!
This is a great story which captures all the realism of professional athletic competition and training at a time in history when women were expected to confine their creative efforts to home, husband and family. It shows the rivalry and the unity that develops amongst the women as they put together a league of their own knowing full well that when the men return, their league will be abandoned in favor of the all male professional league of the pre-war years. Memorable performances by Tom Hanks, Gina Davis, David Straithern and, yes, even Madonna make A League of Their Own a great film. I was privilaged to have known Jean Cione who distinguished herself as picher for the Rockford Peaches during the time period described in this movie. Jean was a tall, left-handed picher and was admitted to both the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Italian American Hall of Fame as well. There is not room enough here to enumerate of describe her athletic ability and accomplishments. She was instrumental in developing a Women's Athletic Program at Eastern Michigan University. Jean passed away in Bozeman, MT last November (2010). The details are there on Google at Jean Cione (Wikipedia)for those interested in knowing more. Jean and I went to the same church and one of my most prized possessions was a baseball she had signed for me. She was an example for young women of how to set high goals and to achieve mightily in an area that had been the domain of men only. This is a great film about a great lady and it is available on Amazon for a great price! Susan Johnston

one of the best sport themed movies around
it's a great film with an excellent cast and story. cast: no one has an ego to out do another. Tom Hanks does a superb job of balancing out the rest of the female cast. "ballplayers...?" [spit] story: a very important time in our history. WW II is set as a backdrop for the Women's league to even be a thing at the time. further, women have only earned their suffrage in the last 20-plus years. plus, women were still seen as stay at home mothers and the domestic lifestyle was their paths in life at the time. not much they could do in a male dominated world. that is, up until we (US) entered WW II. something to think about as you watch this film, because there are times when things show up in the film that i have detailed here. i'm a guy and the stuff they are to do is stomach churning. one note: i cannot call grown females as "girls" as portrayed in the film. i don't hear girls and gentlemen. so why low ball females collectively? yeah, yeah, i know it is a sign of the times. i'm pointing out the fact something i couldn't and won't do simply because society allows it.

One of the earliest films to draw attention to the issue of sexism
Many reviewers have pointed out that the film is as much about the treatment of women in the workplace, and the friendships they developed while playing together, as it is about the Women's Baseball League. I saw it for the third time, and I finally recognized the many nuances in the film that I had previously overlooked. So I bought the Blu-ray version to watch again. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The acting was good, and well cast with celebrities whose roles would make it a classic. I once created a course, Hollywood and History, which was designed to use the movies as a window into the realities of the times portrayed. I wish that I have used this one. When the war was over, Rosie the Riveter and these female baseball players soon were relegated to their roles of wife and homemaker. But the world was already changing. Women had proved that they could do the same jobs that men did. But the time was not right for them to assert themselves. That would have to wait another decade to take root as a movement.
