Are the numbers etched in or printed on?

It is printed on, but it does not rub or scrape off with my fingernail. It appears to be a good enamel paint. My plastic one of 40 years was painted on and it never lost paint. I just sat on it and broke it. It is very well polished aluminum and feels substantial in my hands. O noticed that this one compared to another aluminum one had the ends polished off perfectly while the other had paint streaked around the ends and looked tacky.
