Just dowatch the side mounting as not ideal for all PCs
Ideal for putting a 2.5" SSD into a standard 3.5" PC slot. No screws required to hold it in place - slide it into the opening and the act of closing the door then pushes it in (someone has written detailed instructions on this already). Just do watch the side mounting as not ideal for all PCs. Does work great when fitting into a PC that has a backplace with the power and data cables on. Be aware no instructions so again someone has written an excellent review describing how to insert and fit.

Utterly useless.
This is the first StarTech product I've ever had a problem with. It's utterly pointless as the holes on the side are not the standard for a 3.5in Hard Drive so the converter cannot be mounted in any standard drive tray that utilises the side screws. None of the HP workstations or servers I have can take this converter as the zero tool cradles and docks need to either fit into the screw wholes or align with the screw holes to secure them into place. Why would you make a converter that doesn't use the standard screw spacing? It's a nice idea and looks like it would have worked well if I could ever find something it would fit in!

Does what it says
Pretty simple product, worked first time exactly as expected. All the screws aligned with my new case. The only improvement I'd make (which would apply to SATA internal drives in general, is to make the connectors brightly colored so that you can easily see them in the computer case.

Awesome piece of kit at a very reasonable price!
I must say, I've been after something like this for quite sometime, and when I came across it on Amazon at this price, I HAD to buy it! I have more 2.5" HDD's and SSD's lying around from old laptop's than I'd care to mention, so this was a real game changer for me. To be able to quickly and conveniently swap out one HDD for another in just a few seconds is great!. It's saving me a lot of time too and certainly beats the old method of lugging a big and heavy Full ATX tower off the floor and putting it onto a desk to swap out a HDD/SSD internally!

Info for anyone fitting this into a Drobo 5N (or 5D)
In the end this product works fine, but I had a couple of problems at first:1) there's no instructions with this adapter. I didn't realise the door of the adapter forms part of the drive ejection mechanism, so I was trying to push the drive all the way in while holding the door open... didn't work! It was only after disassembling it I could see how it worked and where I was wrong - you have to let the door close as you push the drive home.2) For Drobo 5N/5D users... at first I thought this product was badly designed - it seemed to be too long, it wouldn't push all the way and 'click' into place in the Drobo. After comparing it with an actual 3.5" hard drive I could see it was exactly the right size. Further examination suggested that the hair-clip-shaped ejector spring at the back of the Drobo's drive bay was poking through the ventilation holes in the back of the adapter and getting in the way.My g/f had the clever idea of wrapping a sheet of thin strong baking paper around the adapter (just the side where the ejector spring was, so as not to block the sata port) while sliding it home, then slipping the paper out just before clicking it into place. A bit fiddly but it worked a treat. I can also see that, despite that awkwardness, the design of this adapter - exactly matching the volume of a 3.5" HDD - makes it about the only one suitable for screwless mounting such as in the Drobo.I was going to all this trouble as I wanted to put silent laptop drives in there...

Non-standard mounting positions. Fine for a desktop, not good for a server RAID array
I bought this to adapt an SSD for mounting in a server caddy for use in my home server, but given that the screw holes on the adapter were not in the standard positions, it was impossible to mount the adapter in the server caddy.Having said that, the build quality was good, and the SSD fit the adapter like a glove, with no screws needed to fix it in position. The adapter holds the drive firmly, and the door of the adapter guides the drive into position as it is closed. Very nice indeed.Perfectly suitable for desktops, where drive position is not critical, but not suitable for mounting drives in a RAID array of a server.

Effective product.
The unit has a simple interlock on the drawer front to discourage inadvertant opening. There is an eject mechanism operated by the front door.Electrically transparent, there should be no loss of performance. It can be secured in a standard bay, or used as an adaptor in a tray-less 3.5 inch hard disk holster. Provided with both side and bottom fix screws.Do not force hard disks, if you have positioned them correctly they insert with just finger pressure as you start to close the door.2.5 inch drives are typically slower than 3.5 inch drives but this provides a neat method of providing a cheap mechanically protected high capacity backup resource with a suitable hard disk and removable when used with 3.5inch holster.Advise against using with video streaming hard disks that tend to run hotter.

Sadly completely useless
We regularly use StarTech products and, generally, find them very good. This is a real exception. No instructions about how to mount the drive inside and very imprecise guides and a strange plastic protusion internally that makes it virtually impossible to see the internal drive connector.

Best thing smoking for adding a extra HD
So I used this inside another bin assembly that held a Ultra slimm 9.5mm dvd drive on top and had a 3.5" opening beneath that would fit in the 5.25" single CD drive opening on my AKAI MPC 4000 se. I popped this beneath the DVD drive fit absolutely perfect and then I slapped a 1TB SATA HD inside it and done worked absolutely perfectly. An best thing is to remove HD simply open door and it ejects the HD just slightly so that when door is fully opened its hanging out about a half inch to just pick up and go and to connect HD back to in my case the MPC you simply lay the HD back in the slot slide in about 75% and as you close the door it has an internal mechanism that reattaches the HD to the system. So far now I've purchased about 6 or 7 of these for my own hardware and making kits to resell to other musicians not so tech savvy and just want it done so they start making beats.lol but ๐๐ up is what I give it for durable construction and how well it works.

More features than you'd expect
Works great, I initially bought it to take apart to adapt SAS drives to SATA, but the drive I used didn't like that. After taking it apart and putting back together I realized how intricate the case is;- It has an 'eject' feature where you open the door and it pulls the drive out for you from the connecting side - though I personally feel like that might break at some point if you're not too careful, but the feature is nice.- Has a drop-down thing where it protects the inner connector a bit from, I would believe, dust or whatever.

Sas ssd not supported
The product description is wrong as it does not support for sas ssd disks. Tried multiple times but the system did not detect the new disk. So had to return.
