An enjoyable book for coin collecting colourers
I never expected to be reviewing a colouring book, but I have to admit, this one is a bit different.I collect coins, and I enjoy drawing with pencils, so it seemed tailor-made for me and yes, Iâm enjoying it.LAYOUTItâs probably a standard size, as far as colouring books go - about A4, around a quarter of an inch thick, featuring 21 different British coins, ranging from 2000 years ago to the present day.You do, however, get more than 21 pictures to colour in, because the 15 oldest coins have a page for each side, front and back (or obverse and reverse đ¤). The 6 coins from the 20th and 21st century show the backs only, not the sides with the monarchsâ heads.Overall, this means that you get 36 separate pictures, which works out at less than 20p per picture. The pictures are printed on every page - ie there are no blank pages, which means that if you are using chalk, or anything else which could rub off, youâll need to protect the facing page with an additional clean sheet of paper as a âsandwichâ. Also, youâll need to be careful not to press too hard, or youâll make indentations on the page underneath.Itâs quite tightly bound at the edge, which is good for keeping the whole thing together, however it also means that you need to press quite hard down the middle to open it up flat enough for comfortable colouring. The first few times, until the spine is worn in, keeping the book open can be a bit distracting.PAPER QUALITYThe pages are decent quality, very smooth, and fairly thick, definitely a lot thicker than standard 80g A4 printer paper. If I was hazarding a guess, I would say it was at least 120g, possibly 130g. Not quite cardboard, but definitely heading that way. Not brilliant white, I would say thereâs a very slight hint of cream, but it is almost imperceptible, and it doesnât affect the colouring-in.Itâs great for my preferred medium (colouring pencils); easy to apply and blend, and very easy to rub out as required (which, in my case, is often đ).IMAGE QUALITYThe author has obviously catered for all tastes and skill levels, with a massive variety of coin images. Some, like the Victorian crown are extremely complex, and will require patience, a very steady hand, and several hours. Others, like the Celtic stater, are very simple, and ideal for beginners, unless, of course, you want to use them as a basis to be more creative.All-in-all, Iâm happy with the variety, so far, Iâve completed 6, choosing the complexity of design to suit the time available. See pics for my interpretation of the back (reverse) of the stater.CONCLUSIONI like this book, itâs well made, decent quality, and Iâm enjoying working through it, although not in chronological order, Iâm just picking out what takes my fancy when I feel like it. I hope the author is working on another one, because itâs a great concept, and Iâd like to see a few more of my favourite coins in there, like some of the ÂŁ2s (Shakespeare, please! đ) and the Newton 50p.My only wish/suggestions for next time would for it to be spiral bound, with a blank page facing each picture, to protect the completed colourings, yes, I know that could mean a bit of a price rise, but I think it would be worth it.

Highly recommended
Really great book. A fantastic way to engage children's interest in coins with the facts and information throughout the book inspired my children to research further on some of the royals featured. The coins provide a good balance of detail to keep the colouring interesting and a multitude of designs can be created. The book is great value with quality pages and glossy cover. Makes a great gift for all ages.
