Can you disconnect the microphone and connect the input directly to a speaker output with a resistor?

Not the best way to go about it but yes, it could be done being careful not to over modulate the input.

Is there a way to modify this to work at 12v so it would work with LED strip lighting?

Technically yes, but you would have to add a transformer to raise the voltage to 12v, and reduce the number of resistors or their resistance values.....In short, this isn't the kit you're looking for to do what you're asking.

Do the LEDs all come on at once or do more light up as the sound gets louder?
