Question 1

Is this lopper powered by electricity?  Do I therefore need a long extension cord from my home, or has it a battery? Your blurb and photo don't help.

It does not have a battery, and you would need an extension lead.  I must let you know that I am 65 years old and a woman living on her own and I have found this very easy to use and it cuts through branches with no trouble, you have to keep oiling the chain but that is not difficult, I would recommend.

Question 2

can I use regular chainsaw chain oil or is it too thick, also what size file is needed to sharpen the chain ?

Chain saw oil is okay. I don't bother with trying to fill the little resivour as its a pain. My first model didn't have this.. SO just put some oil in a plastic water bottle with the sports drinking top, and the just pour some oil on the chain every so often. File should be 4mm (5/32) fits 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch (0.375) pitch. These are great saws for logging branches, Im on my second and would buy again.cheers

How do I do a proper directional felling cut with this tool?

Firstly, determine which way you want the branch or sapling to fall then cu from. Then cut from the opposite side with the chainsaw whilst  gripping the receiving side with the non working jaw. Try for a 45 degree cut . Max width to cut approximately 3 inches.   It’s easy when you get used to it.

What is the lopper like on 1/2 inch / minimum width branches?

I have used it a few times and it is excellent all round.   I would never use a traditional chain saw for safety fears, but this is safe and feels so. Used carefully it is impossible to injure yourself, and it positively makes mincemeat out of branches up to two inches diameter.  If only the manufacturers had included some chain oil in the package, it would have been perfect.  If you buy one, make sure you acquire some chain oil to go with it and use frequently as directed in the instructions.   Paul, West Mids.
