Good place to learn drum patterns
The book really seems to be aimed at traditional bands so that the band can practice with a drum machine when they don't have a drummer. Some of the styles seem a bit old-fashioned, like twist and waltz. I would love to see an updated version of this book covering electronic music styles more suitable for drum machines, such as techno, dnb, trance, etc.The drum machine patterns in the book are accompanied by the proper drum music. The pattern beats are also numbered which was something missing from the other 200 Drum Machine Patterns book.Even though it's dated, I would still recommend this book to beginners to help them learn the basics.

If you can get something from this book...
... you're doing something wrong. I've had it less than a day. I'm transcribing the patterns into Ableton live and adapting them to suit. I can already feel my vocabulary for rhythm increasing. I don't feel like I'm just throwing stuff at a wall and I don't feel like I'm just dragging and dropping loops.Brilliant resource. Essential.

Drum machine patterns
This book is clear to understand & contains a small section of clear reading to make sure you get how it works, i liked that it showed you the patterns as musical score as well as a typical midi score. he beats so far seem good but defenatly need alittle personalising, as well as basic beats the book gives good enough examples of fills (called breakes in the book), the book is clearly sectioned out wellThe only problem for alot of people is that it dont cover electronica, no house, hip-hop or D&B!!! these where the areas i had hoped it would help with! but still the genres it does cover can easily be adapted (&& the funk beats can be used to make funky house easily enough), Im not dissapointed with the book & gave it 4 stars because its good in the areas it uses (just dont expect electronica or to not need to make personal edits to the beats)Overall a good simple book to get any beginners making beats that would other wise take alot of effort to learn & master!

Important piece of "literature" to every electronic musician.
Absolutely must have for every modern musician - yes it contain patterns from before 1990, but they are absolutely essential to understand, and most newest stuff is anyway built on them. Those are fundations of all music. Get it - its only 6 quid or so.

Old but valuable.
Yes it's older styles of music (but Composition for Computer Musicians does a fantastic job of more up to date drum and EDM patterns). Yes the print quality isn't great. Yes (I believe) you can get the book online) ***BUT*** having a 'dictionary' of drum patterns for different styles of music to use as a template is VERY useful.Around 20 different styles of music are covered (OK I might not use Waltz or Paso Doble myself) and with, possibly a little conversion, you plug the beats into your DAW drum machine and get a decent starting point for your drums.

Fine for golden oldies.
The book is concise and easy to use, but if you're looking for something to help with genres from after 1970 you will be disappointed.Nice and cheap though.

Great to conquer inspiration definiency when programming
Great to conquer inspiration definiency when programming. Has great tips and great patterns. Also its a bloody book so you can read it while your DAW is open or when your just sat with a drum machine. Midi clips of all these would be awesome though!

good book
this book is little bit dated so some styles of music you like may not be included. but overall it is still a good book to help create nice beats, breaks, in a drum machine

Simple and comprehensive guide to drum machine programming
Very easy to use and works perfectly with TR-808 style drum machines. Helps keep my patterns fresh so I can get out of the 4-to-the-floor rut. Highly recommend!
