How do you set it up? I plugged it in but it’s not even working!!

It should turn on by the switch, no special requirements, make sure the switch is in on your wall socket, other than that i could only imagine that's its broken, so I'd suggest you return it to Amazon and get a replacement as it is a lovely item

Is there any way to tighten the pole to the base? My item leans to one side and i have to balance it

There's a nut on the bottom. You just tighten it.
