How does this compare to the Thermapen, which costs over 3x as much?

I have both. Bought the javelin pro for use on an upstate getaway and was concerned about loss and/or general camping destruction. Couldn't have asked for a better product. Differences are:1. Thermapen slightly faster.2. Thermapen's display auto rotates.3. Javelin pro has a handy magnetic strip.4. Thermapen has a motion sensor to wake it if you're using it on and off all day.5. The literature says the thermapen is waterproof as opposed to splash proof, but I've dropped the javelin in a pot of water and it didn't affect it.While these are differences, I've found them to be differences without a distinction. I use them both happily. I'm a little concerned, though, about your question about cost as the thermapen is a little less than twice the price of the javelin pro, not over three times the price. I wonder if you might be looking at the regular javelin which I've used and is great for $25 but has no back light (a must for grilling at night) and is chintzy in comparison to the other two. In sum, the thermapen is a little nicer, but if I didn't already own one, I'd buy the javelin pro.

What is the difference beteen the Pro and the Pro Duo?

In terms of speed and accuracy, they are the same. However, the PRO Duo has a special LCD display that allows it to rotate depending on how it the device is held, a function useful for lefties. The display is also unique because it is incredibly clear no matter which angle you look at it. Lastly, internal sensors also allow you to wake the device by just moving it after it had gone to sleep (60 mins of inactivity).

this has already stopped working and i cannot get anyone from lava tools to respond to emails... is there a number i can call?

Lavatools will never respond to your request for warranty repair or coverage. Their only presence in the U.S. is a distribution warehouse. You should consider the Javelin as disposable. A better choice is ASIN B08LN35B69 Inkbird 1HT-1S. It has all the features of the Thermapen Mark IV which has long been favored by professional chefs.
