What size are the compartments?

75 x 65 x 55mm deep approx - depends which one you measure. You can remove individual spacer walls but I wouldn't recommend this as it would weaken the integrity of the compartments overall, especially if you storing stuff like screws, nuts and bolts etc. which are heavy. A excellent box if you don't abuse it weight wise IMO - I bought a second on a subsequent order.

How many compartments?

It has 18 individual compartment with removeable inserts to change the compartment sizes on their length (The width fixed at 75mm in 3 rows)

Can I remove some of the partitions to create oblong comparments of twice the size?

Yes you can remove the yellow divider between the rows

Would one of these be suitable for storing little lego pieces?

I have four of the 18” boxes and 2 of the 13” boxes. I use the 18” boxes for storing Lego and Meccano, both technical versions with servos and sensors. They supplement larger boxes for some of the larger parts - wheels and control units. So, more than capable of storing small parts.
