A Handy Adapter with Some Limitations
A Handy Adapter with Some Limitations The RØDE VXLR Mini-jack to XLR Adaptor is a useful accessory for anyone looking to connect a 3.5mm microphone to a device with XLR inputs. Its compact and well-built design makes it a convenient solution for on-the-go recording scenarios. One of the standout features of this adapter is its durability. True to RØDE's reputation, it is constructed with high-quality materials and features rugged connectors and strain relief sleeves, ensuring reliable use for years to come. The 1-year warranty further adds to the peace of mind for buyers. However, it's important to note that the VXLR is not compatible with microphones that require plug-in power, such as the RØDE VideoMicro. This limitation may be a dealbreaker for some users who prefer the convenience of microphones with built-in power solutions. Additionally, while the adapter's dimensions (58mm x 19mm x 19mm) make it relatively compact, it may still add some bulk to your setup, which could be a concern for those seeking a truly minimalist solution. Overall, the RØDE VXLR Mini-jack to XLR Adaptor is a solid choice for anyone in need of a reliable adapter to connect their 3.5mm microphone to an XLR input device. Its durability and RØDE's reputation for quality are significant advantages, but the compatibility limitations and potential added bulk are worth considering before making a purchase.

Solid adapter, works flawlessly
Really good piece of kit. Feels well made and connects securely without any looseness. Once plugged in, it just works—no noise, no signal issues. Great for integrating different bits of audio gear, especially when moving between mini-jack and XLR setups. Reliable and does exactly what it’s supposed to do.

Reliable and High-Quality Audio Adapter
The RØDE VXLR Mini-jack to XLR Adapter is an excellent solution for anyone looking to connect a 3.5mm microphone to an XLR input with ease. The build quality is solid, and the adapter feels durable enough for regular use in both studio and on-location settings. One of the standout features is the secure connection it provides—there’s no unwanted movement or static noise when using it, ensuring a clean and professional audio signal. It’s lightweight and compact, making it easy to carry in any gear bag without adding bulk. This adapter has been a fantastic addition to my setup, allowing me to use lavalier and shotgun microphones seamlessly with my professional XLR equipment. If you need a reliable and well-built mini-jack to XLR adapter, this one is definitely worth considering.

Confusion Abounds!
Be aware that this adapter is *NOT* suitable for mono mini-jacks (those with only tip and sleeve connections) despite the product description. I don't think the vendor can really be blamed for the confusion. It's Rode who are at fault. The back of the printed Rode packet declares: 'The VXLR is used to convert a Mono 3.5mm mini-jack to a 3 pin XLR' And right next to this it has a wiring diagram showing connections for a stereo mini-jack plug! I have uploaded an image showing the packet for reference. See above. In the diagram, the tip and ring (right and left channels) are connected together and sent to pin 2 (+ve) of the XLR (as you would expect). The sleeve (ground) is connected to pins 3 (-ve) and 1 (ground) of the XLR (again, as you would expect). So which is it Rode - is it meant for mono or stereo mini-jacks or is it for both? The fact is that all Rode mono mics are manufactured with *stereo plugs* - it's just that the same signal is connected to tip and ring. So when Rode talk about this adapter being suitable for mono 3.5mm mini-jacks, what they actually mean is *stereo* mini-jacks with *mono* wiring. I have seen people state that Rode sell two different versions of this adapter. I'm afraid this is incorrect. There is only one, and this is it. So, if you're intending to use this Rode adapter with a non-Rode mic, check if it has a stereo mini-jack. If your mic has a true mono mini-jack (like the Audio-Technica ATR35s) then this adapter is *NOT* going to work. Why? Because when you use a true mono jack, signal and ground become connected together, because the sleeve (earth) in a mono mini-jack extends to where the ring (right channel) is on a stereo mini-jack. So you end up with left, right and earth all connected together and no signal. The 'bodge' to get it to work is to pull the mini-jack partially out of the socket so the sleeve doesn't reach the ring connector- and who wants to operate like that? (An interesting side-note here - the newer Audio-Technica ATR3350 *does* come with a stereo mini-jack despite being a mono mic - even though the official product image suggests that it has a mono jack - so it's not just Rode who are creating confusion.) Be aware that you're not going to get a stereo signal through this adapter even if you have a stereo mic - the 3-pin XLR plug only supports mono signals, so you will find left and right channels being combined. If you want to use a stereo mic with XLR, you're going to have to find a Y-adapter lead to separate the signal to two XLR plugs. The adapter itself is robust and well made, as you would expect from a company like Rode. So, in summary: 1. You have a mono mic with a stereo mini-jack? Great - this is the adapter for you. 2. You have a stereo mic with a stereo mini-jack? This adapter will work, but you're only going to get a mono signal - left and right channels will be combined in the output signal. 3. You have a mono mic with a mono mini-jack? This adapter is *NOT* suitable (and Rode don't make a true mono version). Happy recording!

Great bit of kit for the money
A great product, very useful for using slightly more cost effective 3.5mm equipment such as cables and mics and being able to put them into equipment that uses xlr inputs. obviously there is going to be some quality dropoff but form using this i can say the quality is as good as your going to get with using an adapter anyway. in terms of build quality you would expect good quality from rode at this price, and i was not disappointed. the metal construction feels very sturdy and worth the six quid or so paid for the item. the friction on mounting a 3.5mm jack is good meaning it will not fall out or rattle around at all. One of the good points about this is because it is rode you can trust it and its xlr connection feels strong. not much else to say. not cheap but definitely worth the money if you want to use your 3.5mm kit with a xlr input. on a side note is black so blends in with most kit and looks like your kit is xlr and seems more professional than it actually might be.

Really good but DO NOT WORK with powered lav mics! Get the VXLR+ instead!
These work great but DO NOT WORK with powered lav mics. I have to buy VXLR+ to make my Giant Squid Audio work, but the are very useful for the XLR inputs on my PCM and audio recorders and desk. The are a better quality sound than the 3.5-5mm converter but they do not transmit the 5v needed to power some lav mics. 48v 24v and other power outputs from desks and from recorders from the H4N make a very loud hissing sound and the mics are unusable. I will still use these but was disappointed a bit (my fault) The VXLR+ reduce the voltage to the required 5-12v from 48v phantom power and make the lav mics sound great. Very good quality other than that!

Great, but is not very strong
I bought a few of these for work. I needed to get a 3.5mm out from my Rode Wireless into an XLR Zoom recorder. They worked great, but one of them detached when pulling out from the recorder and it separated easily, so I assume it is not very strong or well made. It still works but I have had to tape it together so it does not come apart.

Fantastic
I bought two of these to use my Rode Videomic Pro and also my Rode wireless filmmaker kit on my FS7. Does a great job - it's sturdy, the connections don't feel flimsy at all and I have had no issue in camera or on shoot as a result of the adapters. In fact I tried an XLR to audio-jack lead which I found instead of the 3.5m cables and these adapters, and they didn't work. If you want to use your DSLR sound kit on XLR input cameras or mixers, you'll need these and they won't go wrong.

Rode Quality
The RØDE VXLR Mini-jack to XLR adaptor is small and easy to use. It allows me to connect my rodelink wireless mics to an XLR input. I've not notices any quality issues. The adaptor converts a 3.5mm TRS signal to a balanced XLR, allowing you to connect microphones and other audio devices to XLR inputs

Don't waste your money.
Bought this so that my lavalier mic could plug into my interface. Not only does this intruduce an immense amount of noise, the mic signal through this is so low that it can barely be picked up, even at max gain. Awful and misleading product, if this is supposed to be used for something else, it should be advertised differently.
