Can anyone recommend a lawn improver that doesnt make the 
lawn brown and burnt looking?

Evergreen 4 in 1 is an excellent product which kills weeds & helps revitalise lawns - when properly applied as per instructions.If a lawn is full of weeds, weed & feed will kill them turning moss black and weeds brown.If weed & feed is applied to a very dry lawn without water, or in too high concentrations, it will inevitably chemically poison a lawn, killing lawn worms & scorching the lawn.This isn't the fault of the product but the individual applying it.Non-green fingered individuals should seek help from someone that knows what they are doing.It is better to under apply and re-treat the lawn a few months later, than to over apply and chemically poison your lawn.If your lawn is dry, apply water to it to make it reasonably wet.Then apply treatment as per instructions.If rain doesn't occur within 24-48 hours, spray water onto lawn to help treatment sink into lawn.If lots of moss and weeds die on lawn after 1 week (turning brown or black) - carefully scarify / rake lawn to remove dead matter.Leave lawn for a few weeks to recover to allow the fertiliser to feed your lawn & progressively lower in concentration, then overseed lawn liberally with the appropriate lawn grass seed.Premium fine grass seed without ryegrass - High quality, unshaded lawn, low foot traffic - slow growing, slow germinating (5-8 weeks).Hard wearing grass seed with ryegrass - Normal unshaded lawn, heavy foot traffic - fast growing, fast germination (4 weeks).Shaded lawn - Choose a specialist, shaded grass seed mix.Creating an excellent garden / lawn takes lots of time, love, effort & care!

when is the best time to apply - have lots of moss so wanted to clear this then have it scarified - bit early for feed but need to get moss cleared

When the grass/lawn is reasonable dry and on a dry day I would suggest you scarify first, then by early April or even a little earlier when the outside temperature starts to get over  over 13c during most of the day apply the evergreen , your lawn will get a good start and it will stop and kill the moss.
