Does the job
Works well to help remove the cartridge, I had to use an adjustable pliers to turn the tool as the part was too tight for hand removal.

Works perfect, but it's a tool you hope you never need
My house is 20 years old and it was built originally with all Moen hardware. I had one shower that started to leak and needed to replace the cartridge in it. I tore it apart and tried to remove the old one without this tool (channel locks didn't work) and failed. I bought this and it worked really well. Now I have this in my tool box and may never need it again. That said it's built great and works perfectly. If you need one this one will work but I hope you don't ever need one.

Must have tool for Moen 1224 Cartridge Replacement
This is a really simple tool, but without it replacing the Moen 1224 cartridges is nearly impossible as I found out the hard way. Save yourself the aggravation and wasted time and just get this, you'll be happy that you did. Once I had it, the job of replacing the cartridges went very smoothly.

Yes, get the right tool for the job
I wish it had cost less, but it was worth every penny. Make your job easier and get the right tools. I used screwdrivers to put in and remove the wrong cartridge the first time. When I had to order the correct cartridges, I sucked it up and order the retainer removal tool. Believe me, it made the job so much easier and was worth every penny.

We needed this to help fix a dripping Moen tap.
Bought this to help fix a dripping Moen tap. Luckily we purchased it as our plumber didn't have one. The tool engages the nut that is on the cartridge.

Why a metal tool with sharp teeth to remove plastic insert?
If you bought this tool, itโs likely because you have the plastic threaded piece for your cartridge in too tight and canโt remove it. Here lies the problem, if the plastic insert is in so tight you and you need this tool, there a really good chance the tool will just break the plastic slots it inserts into. Thatโs exactly what happened to me. The tool is just stamped and formed metal and the teeth that are made to fit in the grooves have very sharp edges as if the manufacturer didnโt even bother to break the edges and deburr. Apparently โaint nobody got time for thatโ at their factory. This lack of workmanship caused the sharp METAL teeth to shave away the PLASTIC fitting to where it was impossible to remove the cartridge in my Moen faucet. Had the cartridge used metal for the fitting or the wrench been plastic there wouldnโt be this problem. The best solution would be a metal insert in the cartridge instead of junk, brittle plastic but I suppose using plastic gives an extra few cents profit to go toward the CEOโs bonuses. The lack of forethought makes me reconsider ever buying Moen products again when I can buy a replacement faucet of a different brand for $50 more than the two cartridges and hours of frustration. In the end, thatโs exactly what I did.
