Q: Do they have teeth in the jaw or just a flat surface?

They are flat. I have never seen crescent wrenches with teeth. This is what the picture shows is a crescent wrench but if you are talking visegrips they have teeth in the jaws.

Q: When you adjust the width of the tool right on the nut, does the tool hold its setting or does it have that characteristic play in crescent wrenches?

Thank you kindly for your prompt response. So, are you telling me that once you set it and apply force, there's "no play"? I need a solid answer because I don't want to strip/damage the threads on a bathroom faucet collar handle, or else the collar won't screw back on. (I'm replacing the hot water cartridge and there's two flat slots on the collar threads that allow for a wrench to hold the unit in place while you use another wrench to remove the cartridge. I just don't want to get burnt because I used an adjustable on this project.)
