still the best
Louis L'Amour is still the best in Western writing for balanced story-line, descriptive powers, basic humanity and believable outcomes. 'To Tame a Land' is no exception, the one doubt in the story being the capabilities of the hero while still a young twenty-something in taming a whole lawless community. However, the author sustains a gripping narrative, a tested romance that titillates the reader and a satisfying sense of justice served when all is over. Louis L'Amour rarely disappoints in the quality of the story and his leading characters, along with his powers of description of the physical and human landscapes. He transports his readers easily into the real world of the old West.

The old story cones alive.
Louis LโAmour makes the old West come alive. The parched land becomes as real as the burning sun and the hot wind.

My First Rodeo. As in Western Book
For a book that is not my genre and written so long ago in 1955 I did get into the setting. Some of the writing styles are different to what I usually read and that is perfectly fine. The story is based over a period of time so it needed a faster pace of telling the story through day/scene changes. Regardless, I enjoyed this book and certainly will read more westerns. But that's another story.

Classic L'Amour
I am a bit biased having been a L'Amour fan since I was introduced to the Western novel by my grandfather some 40 years ago. This is the first time in about 20 years that I have returned to this genre, and I can honestly say that I am enjoying them more 2nd time around. L'Amour is a fantastic storyteller, tough guys, daring deeds, superb descriptions of the characters that make up his stories, bit of romance in most, (but definitely not 50 shades of grey) and a welcome, hoped for, conclusion to most of his tales-but not all. You will need to read "To Tame a Land" to make up your own mind! Good, enjoyable and easy reading which does make you reflect on the really important things in life.

The Good Read
possibly one of the best of this authors books and that's saying something if you like westerns you will like these books in my opinion you judge other westerns by how they measure up.

Bloody amazing
So far my favourite book by the master. The pace is fast and the story captivating from the first page. The book contains everything; a kid who grew up to be a hell of a man..drifting throughout the western towns becoming a marshall plus Indians, friendship, betrayal, fast draws, a bunch of outlaws and a love story. Go read the story of Rye Tyler - the Colorado gunfighter.
