a coffee table book you will really read
I know it is somewhat fashionable among certain foodie-types to have Gastronomica visible to all who visit to show how hip and edgy one is. I actually don't know anyone who would care about that part so if you want to know about the actual writing, read on: I like almost all the stories in this book/collection. Most are written in a more documentary/less personal commentary sort of style, with ample research. Most also bring a different perspective to food and eating, which is so much more interesting than the typical "1001 uses for flour you hadn't previously thought of" type of "food writing". If you are the type of person who always wants to know just a little bit more than the average Wiki research trip will give you, get this. The main reason I only give it four stars is that the bulk/style of the printed book is unwieldy because it is designed more as a coffee table book and less as a book one is actually expected to read. But if you get it, read it. Well worth it just for the "huh! I didn't know that!" factor alone.

Best of
Great value. The best of the magazine wrapped up in a coffe table book. Engaging essays, great photography.

I Like It
This book is a compendium of articles about food and its importance in our life. Not a recipe or technique book, it is great sit down reading for someone into food.

ECLECTIC AND WIDE RANGING
This is a standout collection of food essays. A more affordable option than the great but expensive Gastronomica magazine, this book collects wildly diverse selections from that magazine. Most essays are more in depth than the average piece of food writing, and this collection is more highbrow than The Best Food Writing series. Nicely illustrated, this would make a good gift for the serious food lover/ food reader.
