Q: What is the gauge of the aluminum plate material?

Not sure but it is sturdy enough to hold a light panel up. Pretty sturdy when fully assembled.

Q: Can this be installed in the center of a 5 foot square ceiling (1.5 foot clearance on each side)?

With multiple people, a right-angle drill chuck and lots of luck, yes. With just one person and following the directions, no. You slide the LED panel in from the open side after the unit is mounted to the ceiling and then close up one of the side panels to finish it out - being that it's a 2-foot enclosure, you'd use a 2-foot panel to fit it, which means you need two feet to the side of it to line up the panel to slot into it. With 1.5 feet of space available, you can't line up the LED panel correctly to slide it in. To make this work, you pretty much have to leave all the screws loose in the ceiling as well as in the box itself so you can get about six inches of the LED panel into the unit through the bottom first instead of through the side slide channels, then slide the rest of the LED into place. It's tricky and easy to drop the LED panel, plus you need a right-angle drill chuck to slip into the frame and tighten the screws up since they'll have to be left loose on the ceiling to get the panel to open up enough to insert the LED incorrectly to get it going. So, yeah, it can be done - can't be done easily as it's not designed for it, and it's definitely not recommended by the manufacturer. Gonna have to go MacGuyver to make it happen and have some backup to help out.

Q: The 2"x2" surface mount frame is designed to fit most standard thin LED panels, but is the 2" height sufficient to accommodate the attached driver?

Yes one side of the frame is removable with small screws. After frame is mounted the LED panel slides into the frame. The driver clears the frame.
