Just starting carving and this book was a blessing

Excellent book. Very thorough and detailed. I have studied with Dave and this book is like one of his workshops only in book form.

I got this book for two reasons. First, I like Dave Stetson’s carvings and second I wanted to learn to use armatures and models to design my own patterns. The information on design was good.I will say that in his carving descriptions I felt he assumed a lot and seemed to skip over steps. I have a fairly solid foundation in face carving, but if I did not, I believe I would be very frustrated with Dave’s descriptions. Although he describes a few beginner things I would place the majority of the material to be at an intermediate. Level. If you want to learn the basics I would recommend some of Pete Leclairs or Marv kaisersatt’s materialsI am glad I got this volume at the stage I am at. I would not have felt that way as a beginner.But Stetson’s carvings are great.

Great pictures and patterns

Exactly what I needed. Clear and concise both in the written and photo portions of the book

Dave offers a new approach to the study of the human body. I am sure I will learn something new from reading this book.

This book is an excellent addition to the reference library of any woodcarver. It provides concise and easy to follow advice presented in a step-by-step fashion and illustrated with a photograph detailing each step. It is well organized and easy to understand and follow, and should help all carvers as they try to advance thir knowledge of carving techniques
