yes you can recharge these batteries using a specialised charger, the first charge yields approx 90% of capacity, which declines by about 10% after each charge.

Why have I been sent a sealed up flat parcel which is empty that is supposed to have 4x size d batteries in it

sounds like somebody simply forgot to pack them before parcel was sealed
