Bill Brandt: Shadow and Light

This is a fascinating and brilliantly executed book that provides a unique viewpoint on life. The nudes, for which this photographer is famous, are nicely candid. But the landscapes and still lifes presented here are also very much worth a close look. I really enjoy having this book on my coffee table, it invokes a lot of conversation.

Great book

In this book I personally found appreciation of the wide diversity of his work. It covers themes of a wide variety and his mastery of all is exceptional. It is impossible to choose between this book and his book on nudes. Some of his work on nudes is also captured in this book but to limited extent. It is a book which I will recommend to anyone who likes variety in themes but consistency in craftmanship.

The insightful essay's and the reproduction make this a must have book on a photographer that has not had the recognition he deserves. I was introduced to his work by a calender produced by Ilford and then undertook research at the V&A print collection which has some wonderful prints.The book is a gem!

Great service

I have seen quite a few examples of this photographers work and enjoy his striking and sometimes moody black and white images. His work covers a wide spectrum including nudes, portraits, street photography, reportage, architecture and landscapes. Included are prints from the thirties, forties and late fifties and some wartime images. I would say he was a humanist given the intimate portraits of celebrities and also workers and children. The street photography is impressive. The prints are dark and contrasty giving us glimpses of worlds long gone. If you are a monochrome fan this is a good buy, the books title says it all.
