If you have a fenced yard do you need boundary wires

It needs the wire, even if you have a fence, so that, if you have a gate open it won't go through the gate. You >can< put the wire closer to the fence and the mower will hit the fence and back up, but you still need the wire. If you don't have the wire (and the mower inside the wire loop) in a continuous loop around the area, it won't start, let alone mow. There are legal issues, too, I imagine.

Can wires be run along the ground to get the machine across the driveway to the next patch of grass?

You could if you have a cement or asphalt driveway. I do this to cross a cement walkway to the rest of my lawn. However, there is a rush that you could run over the mower when it is crossing the driveway. Also, you cannot cross a gravel driveway this way since the blades are still running when it crosses the pathway.

How frequent is the firmware updated? Does it require a visit to the dealer?
