How can this be of quality to actually protect a rider for this cheap?

Leather is certainly the pinnacle of personal protection while riding, but sometimes it's just not practical. Here in South Florida there are only a few days of the year where it's cool enough to wear leather, even ventilated or perforated. I have a mesh jacket that I wear that is extremely light, but like this one is armored in the elbows shoulders and spine. A few years ago I had an ugly get-off and the mesh jacket prevented any serious injuries except for a broken collarbone, which I'm pretty sure was caused by the helmet. Which in turn kept me from getting a traumatic brain injury. I'll take a broken collarbone any day over that, but the jacket itself protected my skin and joints. Mesh jackets can be very protective, but they're typically a throwaway after one wreck whereas leather is good for several instances.

Is this jacket hot in the summer

It has multiple zippers for airflow ! It also has a removable liner! But like anything, good protection comes with a little cost,good protection on a very hot day I don't think you'll find anything that is going to be cool ! But I am very happy with the jacket so much so I bought two

Hi, I recently bought a similar jacket with a zip out lining. It's a size "Large" and I'm 5'6". Sleeves are probably 1" too long, but Velcro around the wrists makes it a non-issue. My recommendation is whatever "windbreaker" jacket size he wears should be the riding jacket size he wears.
