It will reset the hour meter when you jump it. I can't remember if it needs battery positive, or ground to reset.

Yes it is. We have it mounted in a control panel on paving machine which is exposed to weather.

what is the maximum allowable amperes?

Not sure the max amperage, but I installed it on a Toro zero turn lawnmower (12V Neg ground) with no issues. Works great!
