Does the keyboard fold back so that I can use the iPad without the keyboard in the way?

it does not fold back other than a rather upright position, but you can simply grab your ipad off the keyboard and use it by itself. it's just magnetically attached (although it's a good grip). easy to just pull it off the keyboard and you are in business. my wife has the smaller version and it's an amazing setup. I'm tempted to upgrade to this same solution with my larger ipad pro.

Does it connect "automatically," both magnetically and electronically, to the ipad? Is it bluetooth?

Yes it connects automatically and immediately via the smart connector on the back. It is not Bluetooth.

Why does my keyboard type the wrong characters? Example, shift 8 gives me * , not the ( that is pictured above the 8 on the magic keyboard. Thanks.

Go to settings, general, keyboard, keyboards, and see what setup you have. Is that the correct one for you? I am American and use English (US). The markings on the keys are permanently marked so I am not sure if you got a foreign layout instead of the correct one. Talk to Apple.

Anyone know a good case that works with the magic keyboard that also holds the apple pencil? Also anyone know a good skin to prevent smudges?

You don't need a case when you have the Magic Keyboard that the iPad magnetically hooks to as it is a case when iPad is closed down. Also the pencil is magnetic and hooks right to the Magic Keyboard.

Tastiera compatibile e perfetta “se”….

Ho preso questa tastiera per il prezzo conveniente, infatti mi sembrava strano aver trovato la tastiera magic keyboard della Apple compatibile con il mio iPad Air. La avrei tenuta, se non fosse che sulla tastiera oltre ai numeri e alle lettere italiane ci fossero anche le lettere ucraine, e questo creava un pochino di confusione nell’utilizzo
