Arthur C Clarke meets Andy Weir.
The writing overall has a "Boys Own" feel to it; I was very much reminded of Clarkes "Sands of Mars", although the shipwrecked aspect of "The Martian" is obviously also very evident. I was sceptical when the NASA mission apparently had no research agenda to adhere to, landings and take-offs are skipped over and the "hard" aspect is not glancingly apparent, probably less "hard" than the James S. A. Corey duo. I found that many potentially interesting lines of thought were opened then abandoned (like the Earth conundrum, which - to avoid a spoiler - I will not spell out), leaving a bit of a feel of "all over the place" about it. That said, don't let me put you off buying it, I see lots of people liked the trilogy.

Hard sci-fi, realistic adventure at its best
As a long time hard sci-fi fan I was quite excited to stumble across this series. Quite realistic. The characters were engaging and believable and the storyline stayed interesting. I’m so glad details like the stench of a spaceship, wearing diapers and living on top of one another were included. But, why does everyone keep opening the rovers and venting all that atmosphere? Considering the monumental scale of the “disaster” everyone seems too calm. Someone would be bound to completely lose it. Other than my pet peeves, I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next in the series. Definitely recommend.

If you love USA you will love this.
I'm not a USA hater in any respect but this book although well written with a good story line is a bit too them against the rest of the world and up yours if you disagree. But I'm a sucker and am half way through book 2 which means I will be getting the final instalment of book 3.

Jolly good read.
I take the option of disliking nothing. I liked the humour. I now need to catch up on some jobs.
